And if so inclined, you could legitimately celebrate Christmas according to the Julian calendar. This year December 25th, 2014 on the Julian calendar would be January 7th, 2015 on the Gregorian calendar.
We liked it, Alan. It's better than the reviews indicate. Not especially scenic, but reasonably well acted. If I could cut one scene it would be the "cowboys fighting" scene (you'll see what I mean). Just seems out of place as maturity goes. But it has some good moments.
Yes, we could opt for an Eastern Orthodox Christmas. I think they are the smart ones. They're still shopping for gifts when the after-Christmas specials are underway. ;-) I think we'll be fine taking Christmas as it comes.
Did I ever mention that I once dreamed of the Shingles creature? I am not prone to nightmares, but one night I had three vivid nightmares in a row, all involving disequilibrium. The first was about being in a house on fire. The second, if I recall correctly, involved a shipwreck or seeing people in all the wrong places. But the third was the most vivid. It involved a creature swaying back and forth in front of me like a cobra. It was half cobra and half dragon, and I had the realisation that if I stopped focusing on it, it was going to strike me and kill me. I woke up and called the doctor, and spoke with his nurse. I described my symptoms and said I'd had three nightmares. She said it sounded like Shingles. She was right. It had invaded my temple area and had been raging on and off for about 7 months before it was finally diagnosed that day by the doctor, who finally got to see it in all its terrible glory.
No quibbles here about snow in the mountains or rain in the Central Valley. Thirty inches of rain and as many feet of snow (more in the high mountains) by April first would be very welcome. More would be fine, actually. But not all in a week.
Alan
P.S.: There are places in the Sierra Nevada [Snowy Mountain Range] where more than a hundred feet of snow in a winter was normal. Maybe never again.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone got just the right amount of precipitation and sunshine, sufficient food and shelter, and had reasonably good health? I could so easily be a multi-level socialist.
"From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." Not, alas, according to his desires…
I find myself quoting the Darkovan maxim that "The world goes as it will, and not as we would have it." [So far no one on whom I have sprung it has asked me the source.]
On another note, I got it in mind to make (bran-)mincemeat muffins this holiday season, using my mother's recipe. I haven't made them in years, and dearly love them. (Especially with a bit of butter melted in them while still hot out of the oven.) As luck would have it, I seem to have misplaced or lost the recipe. But a few minutes' searching on the Internet pulled it up. It was probably a Kellogg's recipe, from the newspaper or the box. Here it is:
Howard is first.
ReplyDeleteGood vibes focused on you (and your sweetie), listener! Modern technology IS very helpful as a general thing; you did very well. Get well soon, hear?
ReplyDelete--Alan
P.S.: Did you see Extraterrestrial, and if so, what did you think of it?
Thanks, Alan!
DeleteWe saw Interstellar, but not Extraterrestrial.
I meant "Interstellar."

DeleteOh, and the multi-dimensional aspect is my favourite part of all about the movie. AWESOME!!

DeleteWow, Listener, I'm so sorry you guys are poorly. Get well soon♥
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cat!! We're getting there. Our colds are milder. Just wish my shoulder would stop making me feel like a Voodoo doll! Ha!
DeleteIt's been more than a decade, but boy, do I remember that little demon working over my shoulder with his gimlet!

Excellent description, Alan!

What a strange thing! I never heard the like. Very interesting.

listener ~~ glad to hear you're both getting better. The colds at least.
DeleteMay we all get better and less busy in this coming week. May we get a bit of snow, but not too much, and no rain at all!!
