  2. -10F this morning in NW VT. We've warmed up to -7F on the way to our newly revised high for the day of -6F. Then down to -19F tonight. (The record low is -21F for this date, so we'll see how we fare!)

Yesterday we got a new record: the lowest temp ever for a high for the day...which was 5 degrees colder than the previous record set in 1922. But as a result we only got about 3-4" of snow.

Did you know a bottle of wine can freeze solid on an enclosed back porch?

So here's an interesting weather question:
How come the Naturally Cranberry juice on my kitchen windowsill froze solid
while the White Grape juice, also on that windowsill, has not frozen at all?

(Kinda makes me wonder what's in that White Grape that ought not be there.)

Cat, did you lose power down there, or what? Hope all is well.

    1. Power stayed on. No problems, in our neighborhood anyway. And it doesn't really seem like a whole lot of snow out there.

    2. It may just be that cranberry juice and white grape juice have different chemical properties. One freezing and the other not doesn't necessarily mean one is wholesome and the other not. I imagine your wine might be the
worse for wear when it thaws though.

    3. Cat's right. Grapes aren't cranberries and you don't expect their juices to be chemically identical. I can imagine that grape juice might have more glycerin, which lowers the freezing point.

It's also conceivable that freezing just never got started in the grape juice. Freezing requires a nucleus of ice to get started. Usually that forms spontaneously as a result of random movements of the water molecules. But occasionally it doesn't and the water gets superchilled below its freezing point without actually freezing.

    4. I didn't know that, about the difference between grapes and cranberries. Thanks!

  3. It snowed in the morning but it's bright and sunny now.

I had a long post written and was just reading through it when the screen reader hung up and crashed the computer. No matter. It wasn't very interesting anyway.

  4. Even so, Cat…a long post is an effort! I'm sad yours crashed.
