Howard was on VPR's On Point this morning, about the shutdown, via WBUR Boston. I missed it and am waiting for the show to be posted at the site here: On Point
Thanks for the pix, listener. Not posting much because the internet and life and government is depressing the hell out of me these days.
Tonight outside the grocery there was a man, woman and 3 little kids in a van. The man was holding a sign "We have no home and three kids. Please help. God Bless." And I just shook my head, what could any individual do that would help them as much as they needed? Then too, I have lost my trust of people. A few months ago there was a young woman standing in the median island of a busy street. She was holding up a sign: "Single mother. Need money to get to California." And I thought, where are the kids? And if you have to beg money to *get* to CA, what in the hell are you gonna do if you get there? Another woman was driving a big SUV over at Salvation Army. She asked me if I had any money for gas. I didn't. Then she just kept driving around and around asking people. I couldn't help but think, "If you're low on gas, why are you driving all over the lot rather than walking?" I just don't trust people any more.
I agree that the state of the government is depressing. I keep getting all these e-mails saying the Republicans are going to lose next year. But the bottom line is always, "give us money." Somehow decreases my faith that the conclusion is unbiased.
And I haven't trusted people begging on the street since the 1950s. There was this guy on a crutch saying he had just gotten out of the hospital and needed money to get I-forget-where. About three weeks later, same guy, same story. Guess he didn't recognize me, but I recognized him.
It's still Dean...
