Hooray for Dean! Thank you, listener. I have occasionally been a black-eyed Susan when I was younger. Sleeping in mascara you forgot to remove the night before will do that.
Central California on-the-way-to-work agricultural report. Harvested corn has been plowed under, another cutting of alfalfa underway, cotton bolls opening, raisins picked up and sent to the packing houses, processor tomato harvest continues, almond harvest completed, pistachio harvest yet to begin, large planting of what may be lettuce coming up (plants about two inches in size today).
listener--I checked out LLBean.com and they do have some promising looking jackets and coats, but I think mail ordering a jacket is impractical compared to a store. In addition to being finicky, I am an odd size--my arms are short. And odd things happen; I tried on a (rather expensive)jacket that looked OK and discovered that the sleeves were no good--too tight, and the material wouldn't let (cotton!) shirt sleeves slide through.
On another note, I told Miyoko one of the stops on the Toronto bus tour is the Bata Shoe Museum. It turns out she worked for Bata shoes for a while! I was unfamiliar with the brand, but looked it up on Wikipedia, and both the founder and the company are truly remarkable. (The company has changed focus from manufacturing to retail since the 1990's.) Bata was paternalistic, but the founder considered his business a social mission and passed his principles down to his successors. He was also a very astute businessman--called the Henry Ford of Eastern Europe. It really is worth reading about.
Alan, Mah*Sweetie and I are short in most directions, yet LLBean coats fit us fine. You can call and ask and they'll tell you the sleeve length of any specific item(s) and may be able to suggest which coats have shorter sleeve lengths. I liked the original owner better (his son runs it now), as we were ASSURED of good business practices. But the clothes are still made well.
DEAN and our Susan are FIRST!!

Paternalistic isn't always bad.

DeleteFinally managed to post a second psych lecture on YouTube. (After just about everything possible managed to go wrong.)
ReplyDeleteOh, I know. YouTube can be maddening.
DeleteOvernight I read The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson. A fine read. I can see why it won a Hugo this year.
ReplyDeleteyes. Not my top choice -- I thought it was a little too focused on this novel system of magic -- but certainly a fine story.
DeleteI will check it out on the basis of your recommendations.
