I always learn things here. Actually, the only burning of the Library at Alexandria I ever heard of was the one by Christians. Didn't realize the Romans took a crack at it or the Muslims finished it off. In all three cases, I suppose knowledge posed a threat to the burners. Some sort of parallel could probably be drawn to the failure of the bond initiative for listener's library, but I can't quite work it out.
I learned about the three burnings of the Library from reading Paul Levinson's novel "The Plot to Save Socrates," which one of my book discussion groups recently did. Unfortunately I can't recommend the book because it was clearly intended as the first of presumably three volumes but only two chapters of the second volume were ever published. As a result, a lot of what happens in this volume remains unexplained.
Beautiful, sunny, reasonably warm May Day! AND, I saw my first hummer of the year (neighbors reported them two weeks ago). Wish I had some Russian Sage: they adore it!
Howard Dean is First this fine May Day!

ReplyDeleteHummingbirds recently sighted here, too; they seem rather late this year.
