Mighty cute socks there, listener! Did you knit 'em?

Impressive on the candles!! Like the odd candles story!

Rene, hugz. You're doing good, but it sure ain't easy. And good luck about getting next quarter sewed up!

Back up because the naproxen isn't enough. Waiting on the acetaminophen to kick in. Tired of tr than he ducks, lol! (nibbled to death rather than pecked is better metaphor I think).

  2. Tired of tr than he ? "r than " got inserted because I moved faster than the cursor. Thought I'd gotten it all out. But guess I was tireder than I thought, lol! Didn't even see that hiding there.

Cold morning, but not frigid. Snow tonight, may as much as an inch.

  3. Maybe.

Obviously didn't get enough sleep, lol! Back to try again. . . .

  5. I've been taking advantage of something I read not too long ago. It said that to offset night sleep problems and give your body the rest it needs you should nap between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. for 20 to 90 minutes. Article (sorry can't remember site) said that finishing the nap before 4 p.m. wouldn't interfere with the ability to sleep at night.

Of course shared that info with my brother and he thought I meant nap from 1 to 4! He said, "Oh, I already do that." He wasn't kidding.

    A siesta! Yes!

Seen on the TV news this morning: very heavy snow on the west coast of Japan this year, two or three times normal. (Normal is such that houses in some areas have winter doors on the second story.) Avalanches are frequent (it's generally mountainous country) and buildings (especially unattended ones) are being crushed.

  7. That sounds a lot like what Alaska is experiencing. Scary stuff!

  8. Ah, puddle, I hope you got some more o' the ol' shut eye.

I'm really tired of coughing so much at night, too. So I hear you about the struggle for sleep. Yet I think your nibbling ducks must be a lot harder to deal with. Pain sucks. What does your doc say about it? Any fever?

I went back to work today. Tired, but it went fine.

  9. No, I have no gift for knitting. Those belong to Eldest*Grand. She got the out to show me because I was wearing something similar that a dear friend knit for me some years ago.

BTW, Eldest*Grand lost her first tooth on Thursday! She apparently pulled it out during kindergarten lunch and became an instant celebrity, having to go to the nurse's station for a little cleanup. Her Tooth Fairy is rather bookish and brought her a book about a Gymnastics Fairy. (Grand is a bibliophile who also does gymnastics.) Son*in*Maine says that when its Youngest*Grand's turn, she'll probably expect a ten spot under the pillow. LOL!!

  10. We have glorious sunshine today! The day began with snow...AND...sunshine...at the same time. LOL! We have about 1.5" of new snow. Helps. Keeps the bulbs from starting too soon.

  11. Did. And it was glorious! Good, solid, sound, painless sleep. A pure gift.

I thought yesterday, coming down my dirt road at the river, that there's been absolutely no ice on the river this year. We've had a few very cold nights, but not together. Never long enough to even begin that little frill of ice lace at the edge that everything else builds on, till the sheet meets in the middle.

My worry is that without a good solid freezing period, the fleas and ticks and flies are going to be hell this summer. . . .

But for now: my heating bill has been a good solid half of last year's. . . . So I'll take my blessings where they lay, and not complain.

Just hauled the Goobey out from under the porch again, lol! Amazing the tiny spaces such a giant dog can get through. Another "repair" on the way before I can let him out again (once he's succeeded in one space he'll nevah quit whilst he's able to try). He also found (though I doubt *he's* ever lost track of it) the GIANT rawhide bone -- well, 3/4 of it. . . . One of those holes he's digging to China. . . .

Since fleas live on warm-blooded animals, I don't think the external temperatures matter much to them. Ticks, too. Flies I'm not so sure about, although I have a feeling that the severity of the winter isn't particularly important. Especially considering how quickly they breed in the spring.

My January gas bill came today. Under $200! Number of therms used similar to March and April of last year.

Those hours depend on when you normally go to bed. They're probably right if you consider 10 pm "bedtime." Make it two hours later if you consider midnight "early-to-bed."

    ReplyDelete
  14. They live ON, but they also "jump" (in the case of fleas) or *fall* (in the case of ticks) off. In which case, a good long freeze takes care of a whole lot of em. . . . Flea season ends around here, normally the beginning of November (though the cautious treat with meds through the end of same). I noted, living around a lot of livestock, years ago, that a mild winter meant hellish fly season next spring into summer. I'm sure arctic and sub arctic fleas/flies/ticks have adapted a bit to winter through. Black flies surely have! But the times they is a changing. Edwin noted before he died an article he'd seen that researchers were already beginning to see changes in the DNA of butterflies vis a vis warmer weather.

  15. listener, the ducks have to do with hip/knee pain. The knees are mostly better since I stopped trying to raise the end of the bed. The hip pain seems to have to do with the weight loss/malnutrition: the bones feel like they're trying to come through my skin. I've never been painfully thin since puberty until now. I'm beginning to understand the painfully part. The weight gain IS helping: I can now sit on a hard chair again, lol! It may also have had to do initially with not wanting to move around much during sleep because of post op discomfort. But since that discomfort's gone, this is either unrelated, or the tag end of the chain.

  16. Might be good to ask at the doc's (or the forum) how common this is and, if it's "normal," how long to expect it to go on.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I wonder how our DNA will alter.

  18. BTW, the seeker I'm meeting with again wants to barter guidance for knitting for me!! She even does sleeves. I'm warmed by this in several ways.

  19. Bill, found this. I knew they were off a good bit, but didn't realize it was *that* much, lol!

    Flea Protection & Prevention
    www.clermontanimal.net/FleaProtectionPrevention.html

The number of fleas increases throughout the season, making flea problems worst during the fall months. Fleas only spend 5-15% of the time on the animal.

  21. I 'spect it has a whole lot more to do with being 71 and skinny than with the achalasia, lol! And I'm having to *work hard* at staying skinny, lol! (Not really skinny at all, either, in reality: a size 8/10. I'd likely be dead I think at a size 4/6. . . .)

  22. On the REALLY positive side, my good balance has pretty much returned. And I AM going to mention that to Laura when I see her: If an "elderly" patient mentions they're having balance problems: check their electrolytes!

  24. Nice day here and I felt up to spraying and pruning--big mistake. I did a REAL job on that tendon in my right knee when I stepped down a slope just wrong; was barely able to hobble through the rest of the oil spray for the fruit trees and roses leaning hard a cane. A good hot bath and 20 grains of aspirin and I still need crutches to get around the house. To say that is a letdown would be an understatement. The remainder of today and all of tomorrow are for rest, much as I feel guilty about not working in the yard. It seems the new-fangled copper spray I got as a substitute for lime sulphur can't be applied as a mixed dormant spray with oil, so that has to wait for three weeks. And pruning CAN be done any time the tools are sharp, although when the trees are bare is best as well as easiest. [The crutches are a souvenir from about fifteen years ago when I bunged up my right knee another way--ruptured baker's cyst.]

  29. This has to be used by that great left wing conspiracy:

"The letter sent Friday to the Federal Election Commission by a law firm representing the [Romney] campaign noted that the two funds left off the report together generated less than $5,000 in income.

The account in the Swiss bank UBS, which held $3 million until it was closed in 2010, earned about $1,700 in interest."--LA Times

"UBS in 2009 paid a $780 million settlement to avoid criminal prosecution on charges that its bankers helped thousands of American clients duck federal taxes.
UBS ultimately gave U.S. authorities the names and account data for more than 4,500 of those clients. The handover resulted in dozens of tax-related indictments and convictions, and prompted thousands of others with undisclosed offshore accounts to take advantage of IRS voluntary disclosure programs that promised leniency for those who decided to come clean."--USA Today

  30. Well, yes, it is. And perhaps the police can be ribbed about having all that time to inspect the decals on their squad cars, non?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Already (about seven hours later) significantly better. I can get around with one crutch instead of two. But I am not yet canceling the doctor's appointment for Tuesday afternoon. Took another 20 grains of aspirin.

  32. Thanks for the sympathy; and it occurs to me to wonder if I am marking myself as a dinosaur by giving aspirin doses in grains...

  33. Looking at the caucus returns for Nevada, I note that the total number of votes was about 9,000. That would be less than the turnout for a New Mexico State Aggies basketball game, and about equal to the population of, well, some non-metropolitan place or other...

  34. Glad to hear it about the balancing act!! Go puddle!

I believe you'll lick the ducks too, dear friend. ♥

  36. Yah, we've been chuckling over that for two days! Can't believe I didn't mention it here.

Everyone here ~ including those with utmost respect for the folks in blue ~ thinks the creativity and humour involved deserves honour and recognition! Mah*Sweetie wonders if it was a prank on the inspector, who just plumb missed it. But FOUR YEARS?!! Officers have been using these squad cars daily for four years and never noticed?!! One can hardly fault the QA person who maybe saw the design for 15 minutes...! ROFLMEO!!!!!

  38. Active Nevada voters:
    Total 1,083K
    Democrats 448K
    Republicans 400K
    Others 235K
    Voted in GOP caucus: 16K (Correction--not 9K)
Voted for Romney in GOP Caucus: 7K.

    7K/400K X100 = 1.75% of active GOP voters
    7K/1083K X 100 = 0.6% of active Nevada voters

    Looks underwhelming to me...

  39. The underwhelming turnout reflects voters' feelings about the candidates.
