Changeable Weather

  1. Howard Dean primus inter pares est.

Been away from the blog a bit, nothing wrong. Leg/knee improving significantly every day. Neither cane nor aspirin needed today, no brace this evening. Still need to walk slowly and mindfully, I think.

Reading another Darkover novel now--Recontact, starting with the discovery of Darkover by a Terran survey ship. Published 1993 (coauthored by Merceds Lackey). Irritated by the landing craft used by the survey party; it is clearly modeled on the US Space Shuttle, which is of course completely unsuitable for landing on and returning to orbit from an unfamiliar world. It should have been something more like a hybrid of a spaceplane and a Harrier jump jet, I think. Computerized landing controls were also demonstrated by then, so no need for manual control; and clouds would not have obscured the ground with radar imaging--but those are less important quibbles. Once past those technological bloopers one can get down to the meat of the story--cultural interactions.

  2. Up tonight with hip pain. Came down for a couple of Naproxen, and waiting for it to take effect. Also having a piece of Strawberry Daiquiri Cheesecake. Medicinally, you understand, lol! To keep the Naproxen from upsetting the tummy. Could be worse.

  3. The impromptu meds worked very well thank you!

Raining and warm. The Goobey's been out and asked back in and is asleep in front of the door. What a love bug da boy is. He's getting just a tad calmer. Trending is correct, lol!

Nothing exciting planned for today -- just general cleanup continuing. Couple of awful pretty sweaters being watched on eBay, grin. But no must haves.

  4. Thanks for yet another great book review! :-)

  5. Sooo glad you're still mending well and taking care. ♥

  6. Actually, I *do* understand! You certainly don't need to add a difficulty. Is your pain primarily nerve related or is it muscle related? Naproxen is best for nerve pain, Ibuprofen best for muscle pain. [And either way you'd need the cheesecake. ;-) ]

  7. LOL! I first read that as "pretty awful sweaters" and wondered why you'd want them. :-D

I hope you get the awful pretty ones. Do you have a favourite colour this season?

  8. Yayyyy for the meds working!

I slept a full 9 hours night before last and 8 hours last night.
It feels AMAZING to feel good again!!!

I enjoyed that book. There is some controversy about how much MZB had to do with it. This was after her stroke and the first Darkover book after that (Heirs of Hemmerfeld) was clearly ghosted by someone without a clue. Some people think Lackey did this one in its entirety. My view as I was reading the book was that Lackey did the chapters told from a Terran POV and MZB those from a Darkovan POV. There are several instances where characters express opinions at variance with those MZB held, but those characters are all Terrans.

  10. Hard to day, lol! One is a spring green with pink flamingos. One is a multi color silk blend (sort of stripes, but wavy). One is a blue jeans blue with three stars on the belly, a line type borders in pale beige or dirty white. One a pure flaming tangerine. One

  11. My keyboad just quit there, lol! But SCARY. . .

One is black wool with bright flower appliques around the edges. One a patchwork in a brick/tangerine, celery, jeans blue, white, putty, and a cream. All but one are cardigans, meant to be worn over something else.

If only I *liked* plain colored dresses, lol! Alas, I'm a fan of flowers (especially flowers on a black back ground).

Just thinking: both of the last times I was over at the UVA Medical Center, I got raves on my sweaters, grin. The first a cream colored cable knit with pink roses, and last week, a patchwork with hearts, every color. I need to get out more: these are NOT things I wear around the house.

  12. So glad! And it DOES, doesn't it?

  13. Nice! I favour the spring green with flamingoes and the multi-patchwork.

I'm a real sucker for Irish fisherman knit sweaters, and something tastefully floral...like vines.

I wear almost all solid colours, though, and spice up with a scarf.

  14. Got a photo of the cream cable knit with pink roses? Sounds gorgeous!!

  15. Yea, verily!!

Off to work shortly, at the Book Mine. The Trustees are meeting there tonight, and need to elect their new Chair. NO ONE wants to do it! LOL!! The woman who just retired from the committee will certainly be a tough act to follow. She was not only chair for the Library but chair of the local Dems. Mary is known for her ability to speak plainly but kindly and to move a meeting along with grace and firmness. She could change the subject so nicely that you'd thought it was your own idear...and NOT be manipulative at all, but totally respectful. A rare gift. So now we're wondering if Co-Chairs might feel less intimidating to those among whom they need to choose from. We'll see!

The next Chair gets to tend the possible expansion of the Library. Daunting indeed!

  16. No pics of the rose sweater, listener, sorry.

Wondering if any of the guys here would like this 'un:

  17. I don't know. It's pretty deep in the hip joint, but comes all the way out to the surface. I've tried the acetaminophen w/codeine; acetaminophen and naproxen (Aleve); acetaminophen w/Oxycontin. I've never had any luck with Ibuprofen, so don't have any. All of them seem to work/not work about equally. Stumped.

  18. Beautiful photo, listener.

  19. Puddle, I'm sorry about the pain. Certainly understand about pills not always working. The cheesecake was definitely a good call though.

  20. It does. I like cable knit.

  21. Oh my, that's bright, isn't it?

I actually would wear it, I like bright colors and multicolored garments, but I'm constrained by the tastes and prejudices of my muggles. When I bought my Rangeley jacket (jean jacket) from Bean's, my mother asked me if I was planning on joining a motorcycle gang. So, sadly, prudence being the better part of valor, I won't be acquiring that jacket.

Is that a pullover? I don't do pullovers. Actually don't wear any kind of sweater as much as I should. And I'm a solid color person. Maybe I think solid colors go better with the beard?

Thought I'd completed the article I was working on last night, but My client came up with some more stuff to do today. Much more work than I wanted the past month and a half, although in all honesty that's offset by the weeks on end when there's no work at all.

  23. Ya. It's a pullover. My first out of control auction when I first got online/on eBay was for a Coogi jacket. First and only time I let that happen. Still, I'm not sorry, and I truly love it (it's red, mostly). I didn't know, but evidently Bill Cosby sweaters from back in the day were mostly Coogis, lol! They do do a whole range in grays/tans. I just love the underwater world ones.

  24. Elsewhere, and for other reasons was thinking about Jill Kinmont.

So checked. And. She died just last week. At 75. One helluva woman. Today is her birthday: she would have been 76. If anyone ever deserved her wings and crown, that lady did.

  26. Four years after her accident at Alta, and at her age, I was a camp counselor at Brighten, the next valley over. I hiked my campers over. And thought about her, though she was a long way from being famous then.

  27. Solid colors go better with the beard? Bill, that is sooooooooo logical.

And thanks for giving me a smile. The Karma Fairy, as Puddle might say, just came and bit me in the arss. Nothing horrible, just a couple of things I said and probably shouldn't have. And now I feel like a rat. So, thanks.

Colbert's mother seriously ill, report sources close to the show

Multiple outlets have cited a family illness as the cause of the suspension of "The Colbert Report," and now a person who has a business relationship with the show has told Huffington Post that the host's mother is seriously ill, and the show will remain suspended until he can return.

  30. Super sad!!

My niece sent me a link today to news that Colbert was planning to tape, then didn't, on Wednesday. Now we know why. :-(

Thanks for posting this, Renee. ♥
