  3. OK, I got caught up with the blog, and the FANTABULOUS GOOD puddle and Renee news in particular!!!!! I am just SO happy for both of you! In fact, I might just have a touch of alternative medicine (a certain classical alpine herbal elixer) to test my esophogeal sphincter by way of celebration.

listener--from the sound of it, the climate in Vermont is not yet such that palm trees will be planted along the streets of Burlington...need a little more global warming for us softies. The is a dry December for us; we haven't had even a good windstorm, much less a rainstorm, to clear the air. Air quality hasn't been this bad in more than ten years. The San Joaquin Valley tends to have an inversion layer, and that combined with prevailing winds that push air (and pollutants) into the valley, means we need to have the air flushed out once in a while. The big problem this time of year (aside from mold spores) is particulates from wood burning, diesel exhaust, etc. I think that explains the light, unproductive cough I have had for several weeks.

  4. Yesterday was almost tropical for New Year's Day. . . . 56º and blue and sunny until late afternoon. Then the wind began. Was quiet chilled by midnight. Today, we'll make it barely above freezing, and only to 20º tomorrow. Tonight, down to 16º and tomorrow night, 11º ~~ looks like winter has finally arrived!

Thanks Alan (and everyone!) for the good wishes. I'm hoping this holds (they sometimes don't), but in the meantime, I'm going to enjoy every single second of semi-normal!!!

  6. Ah Alan, puddle and I would gladly send you some wind, if we could. Having experienced the smoke that came down from the Canadian fires a few years back, you have my sympathies. For what it's worth, Mah*Sweetie has had a light, unproductive cough since about Thanksgiving. His energy level has flagged a bit and I keep trying to talk him into going to see the doctor, but he just says he doesn't want to pay out of pocket for them to tell him it's a virus and to tough it out. Hopefully that's "all" it is and he'll soon be over it. But 5 weeks is pretty long for a virus, in my view.

  7. puddle, I believe I can warm you up. We had a balmy 42F yesterday. It will be in the 30's today, but this afternoon temps are going to drop right down. We're expecting a high tomorrow of 7 (seven) degrees and a low tomorrow night between -5F and -10F. And that's before you factor in the winds to 30mph, which will give us a windchill of around -21F. Heh. I'm guess I'm grateful that the temps will moderate after a couple of days. If this were late January, though, I'd be hoping for two weeks of sub-zero weather, so that we could have our necessary cold snap and move on toward early Spring. Ha!

  8. Quite lovely just now. Right at freezing. The northern sky a deep blue slate, the center all sunlit and gold, with the white bark of the winter sycamore glowing like candles. Bit of wind. And cp to what's coming, relatively toasty.

The wind is the biggest indicator of how tight da kiddle's made this house. I can *see* the wind moving the trees. I cannot *feel* the wind in the house, at all. And that is a huge change. Next tightening up project is to get more permanent and less permeable skirting around the perimeter. So far, however, this has been a *kind* winter on the whole.

Feeling wunnerful. And that said after I've skipped the last two doses of Roxicet. The pay for doing so is considerable less itching. If pain requires some muting, gonna try plain ol' acetaminophen.

listener ~~ This is exactly why I don't like high-deductible plans. I know how easy it is to put off going to the doctor when you think it's something minor and maybe will clear up on its own. But it doesn't help to have a financial excuse to trot out.

  10. Ah, it's wonderful to think of you feeling so well now, puddle!!!

Such a day, here. Got woken from a sound sleep by the phone, as the Library Director called to tell me I'd made an error on Saturday. It was only related to printing out end of month reports, and there was no harm done at all. Not sure why telling me of it couldn't have waited until I'm there for work tomorrow. But, I needed to get up and get going anyway. Had to go to town and back before the big storm front comes through.

Seems it's been coming through all day! First there was snow, coming down hard and fast with huge flakes. That's what I left home during! It was still 34 degrees at that point. Driving to town the temp dropped to 31 and the snow let up. Since then, I've seen everything from sleet to ice pellets, blue sky and sunlight, to snow and dark clouds. In fact, I've seen some of all of these at once in the panorama of the sky! Amazing. The temp still hasn't dropped, so I'm glad I got there and back again before that happens. I got a fresh sack of Chickadee Mix and a new heater for the bird bath too. All good.

  11. Yipes! Glad you said that. I've been so busy I completely forgot about hooking up the bird bath heaters. It's snowing here, has been all day, but only an inch or two expected. It's in the 20's, but with the wind chill it feels like 9 according to the weather guys.

  12. puddle--betcha they prescribed way more Roxicet than you are likely to need; each time I left the hospital after my operations in 2009 they gave me a bottle of Norco and I only used a few tablets. But those few tablets made it possible for me to sleep until acetaminophen was enough and then nothing was necessary.

Very nice day here; too dry for fog, air calm, blue sky, temperatures up to about 70F! Looks like it will be good weather for Naomi's drive back to the Bay Area tomorrow. Hmmm... just realized I have not been coughing today.

    Later, gaters!

  13. Hurrah for no coughing { !!! } and good weather for Naomi's drive! :-)

  14. That's what we're expecting for tomorrow, Susan. Brrrrr. I'm glad I mentioned it. When the birds and beasts have a few good inches of fresh snow they can eat the snow to get the water they need. But a bird bath makes it easier for them and becomes essential when all the water is frozen and there's little to no snow. In such times, to get water bird and beasts have to either eat more that has moisture in it or travel to a local flowing stream. The extra work it takes can really stress them.

  15. I agree, Bill. Of course, that's not really what's keeping him from going. He just does not like to go to the doctor at all, and he certainly doesn't want to go and pay too. LOL! He is less complainy today, so I think he's on the way out of it.

If anyone has any great idears about how to quickly recover one's voice we'd love to hear them before his phone interview happens (possibly tomorrow)! Thanks!!

Sorry, no, I don't have any good ideas.

  18. Lemon and honey are all that come to mind. Wish Edwin were around -- he was pretty close to an expert on the subject. Keep voice box warm. . . . (Do they still make Musterole?)

Don't know why I've been so tired today. Took a 2-1/2 hour nap -- my naps are usually 1-1/2 hours -- and now I'm ready for bed a good 2 hours before my usual bedtime. But no point in staying up when I don't feel like working. Night all!

    ReplyDelete
  20. :-) Apparently not. http://www.reminisce.com/2011/08/musterole-before-there-was-vicks-vaporub/
But that must be akin to a "mustard plaster" as mentioned in the book I just read Rilla of Ingleside which takes place 1914-1919!

I read online that honey is good for the throat and a cough, but that lemon and any other acid can actually make it worse. I'd have doubted that, except that Mah*Sweetie felt markedly worse after drinking a glass of orange juice! He's so sure it was the acid that he won't touch the clementines I bought or even have spaghetti, which is a favourite of his.

  21. While I know the days are lengthening, they still seem rather bleak this week. It could be that it takes our bodies time to catch up with the returning of the light. It's wise to listen to your body at any rate. Sweet dreams, Bill!

  22. Tactical error. Not yet time to quit the Roxicet, lol! After skipping two doses, and feeling fine, went for the big caliber acetaminophen (2 X 500mg). Mistake. But not fatal. Simply that I did *not* want to know the exact pathways of all five trocars, lol! First sense I've physically (as opposed to mentally) had of knowing *how much* work they did inside me. At any rate, pushed the envelope a tiny bit (not much, I'm VERY respectful of that 400mg limit/day on acetaminophen), and took the scheduled dose of Roxicet at 8.

Alan, you're right: they handed over a boatload -- good enough for full dosage for a month. Which is interesting: when I was coping with the periformis pain, which was much worse, couldn't get anything more than a week's worth of muscle relaxant. May be the difference between the fear struck by the FDA in a young doctor beginning practice, and a hot shot surgeon. . . .

  23. I should have checked first--neither of those links for Musta-Creme work, although I found reference to it as an old US patent medicine.

  24. Whooo-weee, I'm glad you lived to tell about it. Thanks for being careful. And I think you're right on the difference between the young doc and the surgeon...especially as the surgeon has more knowledge and experience.

  25. It's okay...Mah*Sweetie wouldn't have liked it anyway. He doesn't even like Vicks.
Heck, it's been like pulling teeth to even get him to gargle with salt water!
