How does your garden grow?

I'm off to the Root Center again today to help with weeding
and we might even put the dome up again!

  1. First of all I am glad everybody here who has reported in is OK. Even if it wasn't a great earthquake it *was* strong enough to damage unreinforced masonry buildings, and I expect houses not fastened to their foundations or with weak foundations or on unstable land might be at some risk as well. A quick check indicates that fault lets loose with such a quake about every sixty years.

No news to speak of here.

  3. Cat, here's the scoop on the National Cathedral:
At Washington's National Cathedral, spokesman Richard Weinberg said three 5- to 8-foot pinnacles had broken from the central tower. He said stone masons and engineers would assess the damage, which also included other pieces that broke and fell on the surrounding lawn.

  5. Friend in Winchester, Virginia said their schools opened this morning, but many districts in surrounding counties didn't due to damage to school buildings. She was in a classroom with her kid's teacher when it struck yesterday, and said the sound was *unholy* ~~ everyone thought the building was collapsing. It wasn't till they were all outside that they realized it was a quake.

  7. Geesh! The storm prediction center has moved the marker again...back to where it was a few days ago. After saying they think the eye would pass over Portsmouth, NH they now have it passing over Springfield, MA and Concord, NH. Take care, Cat. It's not as though your town hasn't had enough trouble this year! Here's the latest:
