More Leaves

I'm thinking of my Dad today. Had he lived, today would have been his 82nd birthday.

  1. Howard is most definitively, definitely, and dearly, FIRST!

  3. Back home, unlaxed. Surgeon said things like "completely normal," "perfect," "healthy" about the appearance of his worksite. I can accept that. Stopped by and visited with Naomi, she seemed fine.

  5. Rumor reported by a columnist in today's Sun-Times: Lisa Madigan, who is expected to be re-elected Illinois Attorney General in November, will run for Mayor of Chicago. The kicker is that Lisa is the daughter of Michael Madigan, Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party.

But that's a rumor reported by a newspaper columnist.

  6. That sounds like good news, Alan! Hurrah for good news!! :-D

  7. Sounds good for Chicago. But if it means Rahm decides to stay...

  8. Hallo All!!

I thought I'd come by and say Hey before my day envelops me. Lots more cleaning to do but I have to get ready and go to work. Hubby has been utterly swamped with work, too. We did just hear that our peeps aren't arriving until later on Friday evening, so we'll have a few extra hours tomorrow to get ready. Hence me having a moment to tell you so. LOL!

TTFN. Have a lovely day! ♥

  9. Emanuel is definitely out as WH Chief of Staff. That's done. He might be able to win back his old Congressional seat in two years. Or maybe not. And maybe some other position could be found for him in Washington.

But I am among those who cannot see any good in having the Mayor of Chicago and the most powerful politician state-wide from the same family. (Yes, Speaker Madigan is clearly more powerful than any governor could possibly be. In some ways, that's why Pat Quinn is in trouble.) That sort of nepotism is far, far too common in Illinois as it is.

Not that I have anything against Lisa Madigan. I would be perfectly happy to see her as either Mayor or Governor once her father retires. And I might add that one reason I am somewhat sceptical of the rumor is that becoming Mayor would effectively block her long-understood ambition to eventually become Governor.

  12. Hi guys.

It's been a grey, chilly day here today, and I've been pretty lack luster activity-wise. Finally got that YouTube uploaded and squared away. Turns out, the video didn't save properly to begin with, so of course it didn't upload right. But, that's about it.

Can't remember if I mentioned yesterday that I finished my reread of The Amazing Interlude and have started rereading The Enchanted April. Sort of into comfort books just now. You know, like comfort food only with fewer calories.

  14. Cool and sunny this afternoon after a good soaking rain last night (hope it kicks the grass into sprouting). Didn't get to get to bed until just before seven. Up just after three. All's quiet.

Did manage a couple of poems early ayem. Nature of love and loss.

  16. Tonight at the Library we had a very talented teenage fiddler come to play and to take questions from all the families that congregated to hear her. At one point she played Loch Lomond and tears welled up in my eyes. It was a favourite of my Dad's and this would have been his 82nd birthday.

Later on in the evening she played a polka, and again I got tears, as my Mom always loved polkas (she could dance them, too).

    I got all verklempt!

  17. So, I go into work and zip into the room where we hang our coats and stuff, got my nametag on, checked the notebook to see what the messages are. Then I go shelve a few books in the Children's Room. As I'm walking back behind the counter, I notice that we have a strange set up in front of the counter a little off to the right. There is bucket, surrounded immediately by 4 wooden chairs, and around the whole lot is yellow CAUTION tape. My first thought was that it has something to do with a children's program. I was even looking around on the floor to see if there was a body outline, for what might be a Hallowe'en set up. But no. Looking up one notices that a celing tile is missing. Going closer one sees that we have a pipe in the ceiling dripping down into the bucket. Uh oh. Turns out our heating system is leaking. And it has antifreeze in it. Our Director has been on the phone since late yesterday trying to get a plumber who can come over and get it fixed. A library patron with some experience looked at it and said we may need to get ahold of the folks who put the system in, 12 years ago. (Hmmm Turns out they were from out of state.) Slowly the heating system is being drained. If we don't get help soon, we may have to close the Library until the pipe can be fixed.

It's funny how many patrons who see the CAUTION tape think it is, as I did, somehow Hallowe'en related. Some thing we did it on purpose and that it's part of some mystery we're highlighting. LOL!

If we HAVE to close, I hope it's this weekend while my granddaughters are in town! But I hope we won't have to close because that is hard on the people who love books and it makes a big sticky mess out of our everyday work.

    Stay tuned!

  20. Yikes! I hope that gets straightened out soon, listener.

Is it common to have antifreeze in the heating systems of buildings?

  21. In other big news of the day, I saw a few photos of Youngest*Granddaughter who is almost 15 moths old. In one she is sleeping with her arm around her elephant. In another she is petting an orange cat. What struck me was that in both photos she is using her left hand. I mentioned this to her Dad (Son*in*Maine) and he replied that he thinks she very well could be left-handed as she uses her left hand a lot.

AWESOME!! I am left handed and so is her Dad. If she is left-handed, she will be the first left-handed grandchild for us. I'm psyched!!

  22. Yes. At least I know my daughter's system has it too. It's very very bad if your heat happens to be off while you're away and a deep freeze happens. No one wants frozen pipes!

  23. The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond

By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomon'.
where me and my true love were ever wont to gae
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.
    Chorus:
O ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak the low road,
    An' I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.
'Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomon',
Where in purple hue the Hieland hills we view,
An' the moon comin' out in the gloamin'.
    (chorus)
The wee birdies sing and the wild flow'rs spring,
    And in sunshine the waters are sleepin';
But the broken heart it kens nae second spring,
Tho' the waefu' may cease frae their greetin'
    (chorus)

  25. Good luck with the heating system.

I'm pretty sure we don't have antifreeze in our heating system. But that's another reason we need to see about getting a backup power generator in case the electricity goes off in winter. I was shocked to discover our new system won't work without electricity.

  26. We're having a nor'easter tomorrow and (up to 7 inches of ) SNOW in the VT mountains!

Woo hoo! Read all about it:

    http://blogs.burlingtonfreepress.com/weather/2010/10/14/ugly-vermont-noreaster-weather-friday/

Did I mention I happen to have an appointment to get my snow tires on, this Monday?! :-)

  27. I can't wait to take photos of some foliage (whatever survives the wind and rain) with snow behind it on the mountain peaks!!

  28. Holy blizzard, Batman!

  29. Wow! Installing that system in Vermont would probably be unethical.
