The U.S. launched a trade war with Canada after trade talks collapsed last week. Trump imposed 50% tariffs on hundreds of Canadian goods, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to retaliate with his own tariffs, set to begin September 8. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Canada should consider using oil as leverage in the economic war, The Associated Press reported.
Canada is America’s No. 1 source of imported crude oil, the fossil fuel that is refined into gasoline. If Canada cuts off crude oil exports, the U.S. doesn’t have a solid backup: “The U.S. is a net exporter of crude oil, but imports millions of barrels a day from Canada, mainly into the upper Midwest,” as economist Paul Krugman explains. “That region could in principle get its oil from Texas instead, but that’s an immediate non-starter: the pipeline infrastructure isn’t there and refineries need heavy Canadian crude rather than lighter Permian basin oil.”
Maybe the White House is counting on Canada to back down. That’s a gamble considering that global oil markets have already been shaken by Iran's seizure of the Strait of Hormuz (more on how that's affecting EV sales below). And Canadians aren't feeling particularly sympathetic after Trump’s threats to their sovereignty. On Monday, Ford called Trump a loser and said the U.S. president can "kiss my ass."

DeleteWhen I had measles, the doctor was afraid I might die. but that was more than 80 years ago. Medicine has improved.

DeleteI had measles and chicken pox together, and ended up in hospital in a coma for a few hours, with a near-death experience. That was nearly 70 years ago.
