It has really been something watching reports about Hurricane Helene. Wil's brother has a place in Tampa and we're waiting to hear how it fared. Could take a week or more to find out. (He's in NH, so not in harm's way.)
US Catholic diocese agrees to pay $323m to child sexual abuse survivors [Click] My first thought was that it must be the New Orleans case, but it is Long Island. We honoured Dame Maggie tonight by watching Tea With the Dames, and we highly recommend it! It's Maggie Smoth, Judi Dench, Elaine Atkins and Joan Plowright all sitting together, in a conversation that is half interview, half remininscence, replete with anecdotes.
I received my voter's guide today. An unusual number of the initiative propositions lacked detailed explanations and arguments--- I supposed because they were submitted too late to be printed. Several were available online, though; of those several arguments (both in favor and opposed) were very unclear. Cynical fellow that I am, I suspect the authors in several [or most?] of those cases are trying to pull fast ones on the voters. I think our ballots will be mailed this coming Monday. -----Alan
Grim new death records amid brutal heat plaguing south-west US [Click] “More than 16 million people under heat alerts on Friday, with Las Vegas on 102nd day of temperatures above 100F.” Looks like we probably have a little hundred-degree weather coming next week. ——Alan
JD Vance to join a Jan. 6 defender and Christian nationalist for a Pa. town hall. Philadelphia Inquirer PHILADELPHIA — Before Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance visits purple Bucks County on Saturday, he’ll be roughly 300 miles away in Monroeville participating in a town hall with a Christian nationalist and defender of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. The town hall is a part of the religiously and politically charged “Courage Tour,” where participants can “experience revival” that marks the “Third Great Awakening.” In a video montage on the tour’s website, the events’ speakers use religion to encourage mass political mobilization from their attendees. --nordy
Possible cluster of human bird-flu infections expands in Missouri. (NYT) A possible cluster of bird flu infections in Missouri has grown to include eight people, in what may be the first examples of person-to-person transmission in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday. “We should be very concerned at this point,” said Dr. James Lawler, co-director of the University of Nebraska’s Global Center for Health Security. “Nobody should be hitting the panic button yet, but we should really be devoting a lot of resources into figuring out what’s going on.” -- nordy
