{43} Wild Sailing!

  1. In response to your "pink" comment on the last thread, Alan...

Remember Doonsbury's Zonker Harris selling "Nerd Care" ~ for folks who didn't want to harm their skin by tanning? It came in "Pale, a Whiter Shade of Pale, and new Minty Green"! (Google: Doonsbury, July 26, 1992!)

I guess we're Palefaces...like in the old westerns. LOL

    1. I don't recall that Doonsbury; but the new Minty Green certainly sounds interesting!

  2. In the photo out front, the wind picked up to 25kts, while we were out sailing...which was more than predicted. We hadn't reefed (shortened) the mainsail, so we just went ahead and sailed it with full sails. It made for a wild ride, and we went out of the bay and onto the broad Lake, then around and island and back. It was my birthday sail, with Wil, Eldest and Root*Center*Son; so we had great crew. Heaps of fun! And fortunately, Loch Nest was equal to it.

    1. Seems kind of mildly weird to me, but if it is legit I will give him an "E" for effort. Maybe I'm a stuffy old guy. [Maybe?!]

    2. Which reminds me of Harris saying she has a gun at home and threatening to use it against intruders. The fact remains that if one has a gun at home for such purposes, one is most likely to shoot a close family member.

    1. My primary source of information about the state and local elections is the state voters’ pamphlet. Since the paper version isn’t here yet, I started investigating my old secondary and tertiary sources, such as the League of Women Voters, the Women’s International League of Peace and Freedom, the state Green Party, and the area Central Labor Council. They have all disappeared!

    2. The League of Women Voters still exists. Here's their home page [click].

    3. I should have been clearer: all their election information has disappeared. Together with magneto telephones, wood stoves, kerosene lamps and outdoor plumbing, I suppose.

    4. Oh yes, the organization still exists, but their election information (at least in California) has vanished. It used to be very good.

    1. I followed your link and stand corrected, Cat. but it seems to only be a partial recapitulation of the information in the standard voter's pamphlet, and it is very slow and difficult to work one's way through. Far less satisfactory than what they used to have, IMO. The state voters' pamphlet is far better, but I liked to check it with independent/alternative sources.

  8. Common Dreams:
California sues Mobile over decades of plastics deception.
In a first-of-its-kind lawsuit, California Attorney General Rob Bonta on Monday sued oil giant ExxonMobil for allegedly deceiving the public about the recyclability of plastics so as to continue increasing production.

The 147-page lawsuit, filed in San Francisco County Superior Court, came following a yearslong investigation that environmental groups were hoping would lead to legal action. They widely celebrated Bonta's move. --nordy

    2. I don't know if it is still the same, but back when I was studying state and local government (about 1965) California and India had the two longest constitutions in the world, and traded honors for the longest back and forth.

  10. From Heather Cox Richardson tonight:

On Sunday, a bipartisan group of 741 national security leaders—some of the biggest names in the field—endorsed Harris. “To the American People,” they wrote. “We are former public servants who swore an oath to the Constitution. Many of us risked our lives for it. We are retired generals, admirals, senior noncommissioned officers, ambassadors, and senior civilian national security leaders. We are Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. We are loyal to the ideals of our nation—like freedom, democracy, and the rule of law—not to any one individual or party.

“We do not agree on everything, but we all adhere to two fundamental principles. First, we believe America’s national security requires a serious and capable Commander-in-Chief. Second, we believe American democracy is invaluable. Each generation has a responsibility to defend it. That is why we, the undersigned, proudly endorse Kamala Harris to be the next President of the United States.

“This election is a choice between serious leadership and vengeful impulsiveness. It is a choice between democracy and authoritarianism. Vice President Harris defends America’s democratic ideals, while former President Donald Trump endangers them.

“We do not make such an assessment lightly. We are trained to make sober, rational decisions. That is how we know Vice President Harris would make an excellent Commander-in-Chief, while Mr. Trump has proven he is not up to the job.”

      Wouldn't that be amazing?
