  1. Predicted high temperature today 105F; average for the date 103, record 108. When I was readying the raisin drying tables last night I began to wonder if I was dehydrated---- unreasonably tired, not hungry, stomach maybe a little off, and a little light headed. When I came inside I weighed myself and found I had lost three pounds. I took two balanced salt tablets and a couple glasses of water, and feel better this morning---- and I had regained two pounds. A couple more salt tabs and some more water are in order today.

    1. Yikes, Alan! I'm glad you're feeling better, but clearly you need to stay on top of the need to hydrate.

  2. As for what to know about the "debate," I know that:

    1. Trump is more obviously senile than ever; he can't even reliably complete a four-syllable word.
    2. Harris is a very good public speaker and an experienced debater; she studied both in college, for starters.

I expect that it will be more a pair of interviews smooshed together than a debate, and Trump will not give coherent responses to the interviewers. How competent the interviewers will prove to be, I have no idea at all.

    1. Turns out Vance was quoting a Facebook post which was, itself, third hand. So, CNN called officials in Springfield, Ohio and they say there are absolutely no reports of pets being abducted or harmed in any way.

  4. Trump's long history of belitting women on the debate stage
(NYT) a review of his onstage clashes with women shows how, over nine years in politics, he has honed a playbook of explicitly gendered attacks against both female candidates and journalists that he is likely to draw from Tuesday when he debates Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump has used his physical presence and body language to intimidate women, made veiled threats, complained that they were uniquely mean and belittled their qualifications in a way that many women view as open sexism. --nordy

  6. We washed our grapes, cut up the stems a bit, and put them out in the sun about 10 AM; after four hours a they are mostly starting to turn brown. High temperatures plus both direct and reflected sunlight.

    1. Nearly 7PM here, and we moved our grapes into the garage for the night. I estimate they are about 95% brown. We aren't going to give them any salt tablets or water. [grin]

P.S.: They are Princess [table] grapes, green, seedless and quite a bit larger than the classic raisin grapes, Thompson Seedless. Some we will inebriate for culinary purposes.

  7. Yesterday I listened to the NPR progran On the Media, which included a critique of the MSM's coverage of Trump and Biden by Tufts University professor Daniel Drezner. The professor said MSM reporting was leaving out how "incoherent" Trump had been on the campaign trail, creating a "false equivalency" between Trump and Harris.
I think this critique is correct. I don't mind criticisms of the press that rely on examples of press conduct. --nordy

    1. There is nothing normal about Trump, nor is there any equivalence between him and Harris. I am very grateful to have access to a variety of news sources that allow me to see and judge for myself, as well as to have the time to do so. I suppose it's not really fair to blame people who are busy with work and families and just living day to day for not grasping what's going on. Though all the new ads from the campaign and The Lincoln Project, the Anti Psycho PAC and others will surely make some impact...I hope!

    2. My theory is that a lot of people just don't pay attention to presidential campaigns until now, and significant numbers not until October. I am not sure what all will be on my ballot this year; but as memory serves me, the voter information packets (which can be substantial in California) come about a week or ten days before the absentee ballots--- and conveniently have a simulacrum of the actual ballot. So when the actual ballot arrives I can fill it out quickly and deliver it to a ballot collection box (which I consider safer than the mailbox) that day or the next. Back in the day I used to try to be the first in my precinct to vote, and often came very close.

    1. I hope this gets hammered into the public consciousness. Especially the part about Trump freeing five thousand Taliban soldiers for nothing in return.
