Just back from morning activities; I was able to walk a full 2km for the first time in a very long while. Along the way I saw a meeting of the neighborhood’s best informed male gossips and inquired about the power outage. Someone is building a house that can’t be seen from others in the neighborhood, just below the bluff at the north end, that should have a dandy view of the river and nature reserve below. The builders dug or bored a hole without checking with the power company, and went through a power cable, that caught fire and started a grass fire that in turn burnt up two power poles (and presumably associated transformers). Five fire trucks responded, evidently the entire rural fire department complement for the area. Not a word about it in the newspaper or online TV web sites. ——Alan P.S.: We have only slight pain at our flu vaccine injection sites today; so far so good. And the temperature is definitely lower; predicted high only 94F, NO POLLEN! and good air quality (AQI= 34). Humidity 29%, on its way down to 17% in the late afternoon.
Aha! And now you know what happened. So good that you were able to tap into the local male gossips' local knowledge. 😉 I imagine that builder will face a hefty fine. I'm glad to hear that the flu vaccine seems relatively mild. PhD*Son today mentioned that he always gets a very sore arm from the flu shot, and feels crummy for a day or so; but this year, no reaction at all! He said he wondered if he'd been given a placebo (aka a sugar shot).
After bomb threats and political vitriol, Ohio mayor says enough. (NYT) The mayor of the Ohio city at the center of a firestorm over immigration says that his town needs help — not the hate that has been stirred by politicians and extremists.
“We are hurting,” the mayor of Springfield, Rob Rue, said in an interview with The New York Times on Thursday.
The tensions over the growing Haitian population in Springfield exploded this week after former President Donald Trump used the presidential debate to spread debunked rumors that Haitians were stealing pets and eating them. --nordy
Common dreams: Analysis shows Trump loyalists have infiltrated election boards in key states. More than 100 election officials across eight swing states in the U.S. presidential race have engaged in partisan election denial in recent years, raising fears they could try to turn the November result in favor of Republican nominee Donald Trump, according to a report released Friday.
The 88-page report, produced by the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD), details the election denial history of 102 county and state election officials in Arizona, Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. The authors found that election deniers have majority control of 15 county election boards in those states and of the statewide board in Georgia. --nordy
For Christmas this year (shhhh) we have bought each of the drivers in our family a small device to keep in the car that can shatter a car window and also cut through a seat belt, for use in escaping after an accident. It hadn't occurred to me it could also be used to rescue a child or pet from a hot car!
I remember police and EMT's carrying such things. Tempered glass (such as they use nowadays in autos) shatters if it is he hard enough by something hard. Car thieves at least used to use spark plugs on a string. -----Alan

I have been mulling over the Pope's statement. I suspect that the US representative at the Vatican will remain a chargé d'affaires for an extended period of time, and the Papal Nuncio to the US may receive fewer courtesies than is typical for an ambassador. -----Alan
We had a great day! We sailed with Eldest and PhD*Son, then we all met up with VT*Grand and Younger*Maine*Teen*Grand for dinner at the restaurant where we had our "50th" Party a month ago. Soooo good to see them all! Also learned that Eldest*Grand came down with Covid in her second week of college, but is better now. The one balm is that we had sent her a care package which she happily received just a couple days before taking ill.

P.S.: Maybe Trump is trying to gin up an "innocent by reason of insanity" defense.
I think Harris has driven him over the edge. --nordy
DeleteYou might say his insanity defense is being trumped up. :she ducks:
DeleteThat's a long=circulating rumor. No reasonable person believes it.
DeleteI would have added a sarcasm emoji (I suppose there is such a thing), but don't know how.

Or maybe they're Roman Catholic and the Pope just gave them a big bag of confusion.
