  1. Hey! Remember the note I left for Heather Cox Richardson about the younger generation telling us Boomers that we need to pass the baton? She responded to me!

"We are still vital to this operation! It’s going to be a very tight race, and our organizing and enthusiasm is KEY!!! I’ve got to keep writing tonight but will speak more on this this week…."

I'm eager to see what she writes on this!

  2. I heard Kamala Harris on NPR temporizing on Israel and the Gaza war. She has been a very strong backer of Israel ala Biden. Now she is mainly talking about the civilian casualties and starvation. Trying to cut a middle ground on this issue, and, I think, falling short. --nordy

    1. Well, the current situation in Gaza is one of those things a US President cannot control, but must deal with. Matters have been building to this point since well before any of us were born--- at least since The Great War.

  3. Obama has endorsed Harris--finally.
Guardian: Barack Obama has endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for US president, meaning the vice-president has now won the backing of all the party’s politically active high-profile figures for her White House bid. nordy

    1. Obama has struck me as a go-along-to-get-along type ever since his days as a Senator; I wanted someone more decisive as President.

  5. The worst VP pick ever [Click] The weirdbilly has rescued the reputation of Sarah Palin, just as Trump rescued the reputation of James Buchanan.

  8. Goodness, things certainly are moving fast.

So, you want a woman as VP pick? I've got a woman for you - Liz Cheney!

A unity ticket. Other countries do it,, why not us? It would consolidate the pro-democracy Republican vote which, may I remind you, Harris needs bigtime. Selecting Cheney would prove conclusively that Harris is serious about excising the cancer that is MAGA from the body politic. There can be few Americans who hate Trump and MAGA more than Cheney. She is a solid, old fashioned Conservative, the kind of person you can disagree with and yet respect.

Next time, Harris can select a Dem. Of course, Cheney might run against her at the head of a Republican ticket. Take a moment to envision that contest. Two serious, intelligent, competent women with experience in government service, both of whose love of and loyalty to the country and the Constitution is unquestionable, both lawyers, within two years of each other in age. Imagine, civil, sober presidential debates about what is best for the country and how to achieve it! No grandstanding. No insults, but rather an actual, grownup discussion of issues. I'm practically in tears just thinking about how wonderfully normal that would be!

Now, what I don't know is whether the requirement that both nominees be of the same party is merely custom, or whether it is encoded in law. If it is law, of course, it can't happen. I do know there was a cross-party POTUS-VP team early on, and it failed disastrously, which is why it has never been tried again. I need to go check that out.

    1. Question answered. It's custom. The Twelfth Amendment does not preclude a presidential nominee selecting a running mate from another party, nor is it prohibited anywhere else in the Constitution. So I say, go for it!

    2. As memory serves me, the Twelfth Amendment replaced the system of the candidate with the most electoral votes becoming President, and the one with the second most becoming VP, which didn't work well. As for other countries, I remember reading about the early days of the Japanese Diet, where members were seated geographically rather than by party. I think that arrangement was changed when one Diet member tried to kill an opposing member seated nearby with a sword; the person struck was protected by his fat.

    3. That's right. There is nothing stopping a nominee of one party selecting a running mate of another though.

    4. If Cheney accepts the VP nomination of the Democratic party, she would be running as a Democrat. This does not stop her from personally identifying as a Republican.

    2. In re Bernie's positive report about the Canadian health care system, I have heard numerous stories (including from my cousin in BC) in the past several years about the Canadian health care system becoming ineffective. Many doctors pulling out of the system, people can't get doctor appointments, can't get prescriptions renewed, can't get surgeries approved, etc. I don't know what has caused the change, but it seems very serious.
