  1. Note re upper respiratory pathogens in reply to comment on previous thread.
The diphtheria toxin is not actually produced by the bacterium (Coronybacterium diphtheriae) whith which it is associated; the toxin is actually a virus of the bacterium. Many years ago I remember reading that there was speculation that throat infections with staph aureus and strep pyogenes might have a similar causation, which could help to explain their decreases in prevalence. At one lab where I worked we did the cultures for an Indian reservation on the west part of the county; if we found just an occasional staph or strep organism in a throat culture, the Indian Health doctors generally didn't treat it, and as a result when we DID find a moderate or heavy growth of those organisms, they were very susceptible to penicillin, which was usually ineffective among people living in the cities. The residents of the reservation lived in very close quarters compared to city dwellers.

I’m pretty sure this was known at the time. DIL works at a hospital where victims were taken. They had to divert staff from various units to the ER.

Bill that would make Vermont the first state to have a 'Climate Superfund' takes a key step forward

“Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously Friday morning to advance a bill that aims to collect damages from big oil companies for the harm their products have brought and will continue to bring to Vermont by causing climate change.”

Every time I make a new post and type the “a href” code thing, I think of puddle…who taught it to me.

  7. Just found a brand new update from puddle’s son.

“This week was a lot like last week. I fight the afternoon commute to have dinner with her. The remote control for the television disappeared so there was no TV this week. I've been asking but so far nothing. We have been going up and down with the bed, rolling her to the right then the left. It's that nagging pain in the spine to pelvis joint. Last night she wanted to try to sit up or get up but only had one second of strength before collapsing onto the mattress. She's asking for help but then complains I'm hurting her when I try, so it's frustrating for us both. It's particularly hard when she doesn't speak well or doesn't hear well. The communication isn't what it needs to be be to work together. But she's hanging in there so this could be turning into long term care of an invalid.”

    4. Boy, that is rough. It makes me think back over the passing of members of my family with which I am familiar. I think of a coworker who maintained that she wanted to go by spontaneous human combustion. Hard to arrange that, though.

    1. I was hoping the article would include a list of such states, but no such luck. Truly a rotten business.
