FIVE

Yup. I ended Candlemas with only 5 pair of hand-dipped candles. (Plus 24 votives)
That's because, while 12 pair were dipped, others did some of the dipping and took those home. It was worth it to be with loved ones and share the days. I think, though, I will plan, next year, to have a lone day ahead of the busy ones.

    1. Yes; I would like to hear how she is doing---hopefully well, considering--- but we must be patient.

    2. It occurs to me that it would be better to say that it is our place to be patient.

    4. UPDATE on puddle!!

Cooter just texted: "Mom was improved when I returned from West Virginia. She was able to breathe better and seemed more alert. Most of all she is willing to participate in rehab. At the moment she is in a hospital bed and can’t get up. She wants out of this environment. I want someone to help her up but that’s not how this place works. It’s still better than a hospital. I’m trying to find a rehab place."

    5. Thank you for the update, listener and Cooter. Helping people get up who can't do it for themselves is one of the major nursing challenges in a hospital--worker injuries are not uncommon, and specialized cranes are generally available. It doesn't surprise me that it wouldn't be done in hospice.

  2. I forget, if indeed I knew, listener: what sort of wax to you use for your candles?

    1. A church gives me the candle stubs from their altar candles. They are at least 55% beeswax. I clean off any black wick or green residue from candlesticks break them in half lengthwise and pull out the wick. Then I place them into a large former pineapple juice can and melt them over a double boiler. I often end up adding some pure white beeswax or melt some yellow beeswax separately.

    2. I figured they would be all or partly beeswax. BTW, paraffin is what remains in the still after all the volatile materials have been distilled off of light oils like Pennsylvania crude; out here what remains is something closer to asphalt or tar.

  7. I received my ballot for the March 5th primary election by mail yesterday, marked it, and dropped it into a nearby ballot box this morning; easy-peasy. I believe the ballots are picked up each evening.

  9. I can't seem to get "reply" to work. But my reply is that to judge by the transcript this guy isn't a very good podcaster. That being said, I've always had a roomette and neither Penny nor Jason ever seriously complained about the upper bunk. We aren't rich enough to seriously consider getting two roomettes or a bedroom.

    1. The subject is completely foreign to me; I suspected that you might have useful observations to offer, Bill. There is no disputing taste, though. I was a little surprised to learn (hear?) that the passenger cars in the West and East were not the same.

    2. The difference actually reflects the height of the highway underpasses. There are a few underpasses in the east that will not accommodate the taller two-level Superliners.
