  1. US military grounds Osprey fleet after crash off coast of Japan kills 8 US airmen

My late brother-in-law piloted Ospreys. He flew rescue missions and saved a lot of lives.
Scary. I hope they get the fleet flying again soon.

    1. I remember when they were developing the craft; they came to the conclusion that a human couldn't safely operate it, and installed a computer to manage it.

    2. Alan, do you recall when they made that decision? Larry flew helicopters out of Hawaii, back in the '80s, I think it was.

    3. Can't say as I do remember, but will see if I can find out. There were fatal crashes early in development

    4. I may misremember the computer control report, but here are some bits from Wikipedia:

Wikipedia: Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey [Click] “The V-22 first flew in 1989 and began flight testing and design alterations; the complexity and difficulties of being the first tiltrotor for military service led to many years of development.” “The V-22 Osprey has had 16 hull-loss accidents with a total of 53 fatalities as of 29 November 2023. During testing from 1991 to 2000, there were four crashes causing 30 fatalities. As of 2023, the V-22 has had 13 crashes which caused fatalities since becoming operational in 2007. The aircraft's accident history has generated controversy over its perceived safety issues.”

  2. We are nearly done putting in the new floor in the master bedroom and walk-in closet. Looks so good. Pictures once it's complete and all spiffed up. I got 5 different paint colour samples to choose the new paint for the hallway. I really wanted an ultra pale and dusky blue gray, but no one has the shade I was picturing. In the end we went with a darker gray-blue, but it's going to go great with the rug runners!

    1. Just because they don't have the shade you want already made up doesn't mean they can't make it. The important thing is to get a good base with plenty of titanium oxide.

    2. We went with a bit darker shade because it goes so well with teh rugs we chose. I think we'll like it very much. Just don't want the hallway to feel dark. But should be fine.

    3. Also, it's hard enough to find an available color even NEAR what I was imagining, without trying to describe it to the person making paint and hoping they can figure out the correct formula. They just push buttons now, anyway, and the machine adds the colour. I remember when they did that by hand with eyedroppers! I would somehow need to have something the correct shade for them to show to the machine.

  3. Time to visit the medico for various routine things that have been neglected because of Covid. Just today I became aware of what seems to be a lipoma on my left elbow.

    1. It occurred to me that the painless lump on my left elbow might be lymph that accumulated because I was putting a brace on my hand too tight at night, so I left the brace off last night. It may be slightly smaller this morning. Will see what the medico says.

    2. It is not life threatening; it is mobile and painless. Last night I left the braces off my hands, and it seems smaller today.---Alan

[video] In outrageous [demented?] appeal, Trump REFUSES to Participate in DC Criminal Case [Click] Terrible fellow that I am, I would consider a bench warrant rather entertaining. These days it is considered poor form for defendants to appear before the jury in visible handcuffs and/or leg irons, but usually there are eyebolts set in the floor beneath the defense table, out of the jurors’ sight. Come to think of it, I was a witness in one trial in absentia; it is legal in the US, albeit rare. The defendant was houseed in the county jail during trial.

  8. [video] by Dr. Becky: It seems that the early universe was probably VERY different from what we thought. [Click] Remember those overmassive galaxies that JWST found that people claimed proved "the big bang never happened?" when in reality it was just that we couldn't explain how they'd got so big? Well, turns out those galaxies probably aren't that massive after all . . . new JWST observations have found evidence that galaxies in the early Universe form different types of stars at different rates to in the Milky Way (called the Initial Mass Function of stars). This then has knock on effects on the calculation of the masses of these distant galaxies...
