Sooo...last night Eldest*Grand (17) had a serious car accident, and amazingly she's okay. She was hit at the driver's side door at high speed, and only the side air bags on the Honda Fit saved her life. She was treated and released with a mild concussion and they are watching her closely for signs of TBI, but so far so good. She doesn't remember the accident or most of the first 30 minutes afterward. Her parents arrived on scene and her mom (an RN) went with her in the ambulance to the medical center. Initial report, which includes statement from one witness, shows it was not Eldest*Grand's fault. But it's currently unclear whether someone turned into her or whether she turned into their path. The report is the former, but Son says the cars look like the latter. Either way, I surmise that the other driver was speeding. We are all HUGELY relieved that she is okay. Son says he should send a thank you gift every December to the engineers who designed side air bags on the Honda Fit. Merry Grateful Christmas! 🎄
Sweet side story. We had 8 hand-crafted Angel ornaments made for our tree, each with one birthstone of a grand. Well, I also sent one to Daughter as her Angel gift. Only, I goofed and had the bead in it set as the December birthstone. 🤷🏻♀️ I realised my error as soon as it shipped, so had another sent with the November birthstone and told her to expect two and why. Well, after Eldest*Grand's accident, I asked Daughter if she could pass the December Angel to Eldest*Grand from us if she had no other plans for it. She is happy to, saying “She certainly had an Angel watching over her last night!” Perfect that it’s the December Angel. I guess it wasn’t an error after all.
I remember a pathologist telling me the minimum speed at which a hit from the side can kill a driver; I don't trust my memory after all these years, but do think he said 27 mph. The deciding factor is whether the heart happens to be full of blood at the moment of impact, in which case it can be torn from the aorta. People can survive far stronger impacts from front or back. I am pretty sure I heard that in the days before side air bags; presumably they would help. Damn shame Honda discontinued the Fit. Glad to hear it successfully accomplished one of its major responsibilities. ----Alan
P.S.: The positions of the vehicles after a crash can be misleading. If they are of the same mass and traveling at the same speed, they will be carried away from the crash site at roughly a 45-degree angle. Conservation of momentum and all that. Several years ago I saw photos of a crash in Canada where that was clearly the case, but many people misunderstood and blamed (in my opinion) the less culpable driver---who did the heroic thing and accepted responsibility without a trial, to spare the families of the decedents. ----Alan
Yes, we completely agree that the Honda Fit should still be in production! We had one for years then sold it to a family who wanted to teach their high school and college bound kids to drive standard.
Glad to heara grand seems to be OK. Thinking about my two accident, one where the other driver turned in front of me and the other where the other driver turned into the side of my car, I'm not sure you could tell the difference aside from which car was damged. Both accidents were on city streets, at city traffic speeds, so neither was particularly serious.
No. In rhe second the driver was making a right hand turn from the inner lane of a street with two lanes in each direction. He somehow didn't notice I was right beside him in the outer lane. In the other I was driving in the right turn lane while other traffic was stopped for the light (which I hadn't yet reached). The driver, who had been in the rightmost of the regulara lanes, suddenly decided he wanted to make a right-hand turn.
Would you believe? I went out to my favorite sushi restaurant tonight and ... They totally comped my food as a ho;oday gift! These are also the people who recently gave me a bottle of cold sake to try.
Hmm. Question is especially relevant because I am currently reading The Doors of Eden for a book discussion. But I don't think so. Despite the fog I could still see my surroundings, and they were all familiar.

We all seem to be almost completely over the upper respiratory virus we have been sharing. I saw in the news that there is a new Covid variant that is spreading very rapidly--wonder if that could be the explanation. After all, the Covid vaccine is not intended to prevent infection altogether, but rather to prevent serious complications. ----Alan
ReplyDeleteWell Newt (temp name for new computer) is up and running, Cooter's leaving me alone to learn. Please pray for me.

DeleteThanks, Alan. My best guess, from the bits I've heard, is that she had right of way and the other driver wasn't paying proper attention.
DeleteThanks, Bill. Any chance those were left hand turns?

DeleteScary stuff! Happy to hear she's relatively okay. Still I'm sure everyone who loves her still has twanging nerves.
ReplyDeleteThanks puddle (I assume)! Yah, we're all still on High Alert...thinking about her all day and soooooooooo relieved she's still with us. 💝

ReplyDeleteAnd it was foggy tonight. Unusual in Chicagoland.
Did you pass through the fog into an alternate world and then return? [grin]
