Sabbath Rest

  1. VT*Grand was in a high school play of Cinderella tonight, and we got to attend. Very well done and we were impressed! We didn't know she had a solo part and were amazed at the Cinderella dress transformation, from maid to princess, with a pull of a string and a twirl right there on stage! Excellent dress design!

  2. Alan, about how long does an episode of BPPV typically last? Thanks for the info, and I'm glad you came through it okay.

    1. It can linger for days, although it tends to weaken and eventually disappear. I tried that new method of treatment only once to be on the safe side, and intend to do it again today. As a precaution I carried my cane when I got up this morning, but it was not necessary. One of the bosses at my former job had a bad attack-- he didn't dare drive for about a week. It had been several years since my previous significant episode; leaving the cane by the headboard of the bed is one of the brighter ideas I have had. In both cases it was triggered by rolling out of bed too quickly while I was not fully awake.

    2. Still not awake enough to realize I had already signed my post before editing it. Working on my first cup of coffee.

That first time or two may have felt like a very long and uncertain event. Well done, setting the cane there. I’ll remember that should I ever have same. It’s not some sort of mini-stroke indicator, is it? If Wil had this sort of episode, given his heart condition, I’d be quite concerned.

    4. Nah, no precursor of anything bad beyond itself--but a damned nuisance, especially as we are hurrying to get to the restroom while half asleep. As we get old, crystals very slowly form in the liquid of the inner ear. If they get big enough, they can be carried along by the fluid bathing the tiny hairs that sense our position and make our brain think we are in a different position than we are, thereby inducing vertigo. The trick to curing it is to make the inner ear fluid carry said crystals to a place where they cannot cause any problems. Incidentally, if people consume truly abusive amounts of alcohol, eventually it will diffuse into the inner ear fluid, decrease its viscosity and therefore the force it exerts on the position-sensing hairs, thus inducing vertigo and nausea. It isn't because the alcohol irritates the gastrointestinal tract.

    5. This sounds familiar. Dad has had trouble with such crystals, though he hasn't mentioned them for some time.

    6. I haven't had that happen (yet), but one night recently, as I rose in the dark night to use the porcelain convenience, I first stood up like I was going toward said location, then realised I wanted to bring my cell phone along as a flashlight. So I turned to my right to pick it up, not recognising that it was actually now behind me. Thus, when I reached to the right for it, I whammed my head on the corner of the dresser! It hurt like heck at the time, but I was extremely lucky...because I hit that corner just barely below my eye and on the bone. I went and got an ice pack and fully expected to wake up to an old fashioner shiner. But there was just the tiniest little red dot! Could have been an Emergency run had I hit 1/4": higher and nabbed my eye.
