The way out of the Bay (onto the broad Lake)

  1. Messages on the last thread!

The boat is nearly ready. We've decided to install a new head (toilet) on the boat on Friday. Just some tweaking after that, and better organising of stored items and our work is done. Waiting for the marina to put our new motor on and to pump out the holding tank. But that's about it. We are hopeful of launching on the 20th or 21st.

    1. I am reminded of the head of the USS Monitor; [Click] first head below the waterline.

    2. Fie on all those intrepid ironclads! The CSS Virginia ironclad (ex-USS Merrimack) sunk the USS Cumberland tall ship, with my Great Great Grandfather on it! Fortunately he was on the far side of the ship when it was strafed, or I might not exist! He was a gunner and I have a copy of his journal.

    3. Currier & Ives image of the battle
The captain refused to lower the Union flag, which gesture was cheered mightily as a rallying cry throughout the north.

  2. I see that Russian forces are being pushed back with heavy casualties in Bakhmut. Also that the UK is delivering or has delivered "Storm Shadow" air-launched ground-following cruise missiles to Ukraine, which have enough range to hit the Kerch Strait Bridge from Ukrainian-held territory with a nearly thousand pound penetrating bomb designed to destroy bridges, underground bunkers, etc. ---Alan

  3. listener— here is a video about quasars [Click] that your young astronomer might find interesting. Near the beginning there is mention of the only (!) quasar that can be seen with a typical amateur telescope.

    1. Very cool! Thanks, Alan. I'm hoping he will come to visit with his Dad to sail with us and I'm going to ask that they bring along the telescope for some late evening enjoyment.
