Yes, closing for good. It's a terrible thing. It's been the most affordable way to sail in the whole region. I don't know what the Boys and Girls Clubs of the area will do for affordable sailing opportunities.
The school was started 42 years ago on land that it leased from the landlady who lives nearby. One person has tended the school for the past 35 years. She owned the moorings and the boats, while the landlady owned the land, clubhouse, sheds and mooring field.
But last year the marina next door was sold to a new owner, who is an investor and not someone who knows about marinas. The land lady approached him about also leasing the space where the Sailing School has been. The marina owner is a landlord in the area who is well known for never fixing holes in walls or taking care of his buildings. Has been fined many times.
The Sailing School was not given an alternative worth taking, and was not able to find a new location.
So, pretty soon my family and I would have no way to sail. But I searched and searched and found a boat for sale worth buying, and we did!
I helped organise today's event ... a work day to help the School physically close down, our last pot luck and barbecue, and giving the person who had tended the school for 35 years a large loving cup Lifetime Achievement Award from the whole dang club. (It's been both a Sailing School and a Sailing Club.). I also suggested we have a International Sailing Club Alumni Association, so folks can stay in touch and get together, race, share boats, etc..
Wil presented the award and folks told stories and said thanks to our peerless leader. A very fine sendoff for a place that never should have had to close.

ReplyDeleteHas anyone here had the Shingrix vaccine? Are side effects as bad as predicted?
Our doctor figured that since we had the earlier vaccine we didn't need the newer one (which I suppose is Shingrix).

I also had the earlier vaccine. No side effects there.

DeleteThe day went very well, especially given the circumstances.
The sailing school is closing for good?? I had previously assumed it was just closing for the season. I'm sure it will be missed.

Sad, and yet a good close.

I'm trying to get my name to disaplay as "W A Thomasson", which is actually the way it appears on my Google account.
ReplyDeleteDidn't work
DeleteMarvels of modern technology; my name has been scrambled on a bank account for a long time, but no need to change since it still works.
