‘Many of us are struggling’: why US universities are facing a wave of strikes [Click] I’m not sure (I threw away my old account books), but adjusted for inflation I think the $38K per annum the graduate students are pushing for at the University of Michigan is about what I received when I was in grad school way back when ($500-$600 per month). —Alan
Legislating protection for fetal tissue under the umbrella of property rights has no moral basis and no physical rationale. I suspect that the fixation on intent and potential is a quirk of the instinct-driven mind that has been severed from the temporal lobes: i.e. the part of the brain that registers process and time.
Although Democrats benefit from gerrymandering in Illinois, I would very much like to see this abolished. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to accomplish this. The state constitution allows citizen initiatives only if they affect absolutely nothing but the powers of the state legislature, and two attempts to accomplish this have been struck down by the courts.
Thanks to Gov. Schwartzenegger we are less gerrymandered than before, but still gerrymandered. Cynical fellow that I am, I am of the opinion that the Democrats in the legislature decided to have some sure Republican seats in this area, and bent the rules for setting the district boundaries to achieve that. To make assurance doubly sure the state and national Democratic Party organizations rarely if ever give even the slightest support to the Democratic candidates here. ---Alan

DeleteI’m all for outlawing gerrymandering. It’s insanity and greed run amok.
