We have a new little Icelandic horse in the family...

Photos by VT*Grand's Mama

He was wearing blankets and a neck gaiter because
he arrived from Florida on our windy -22ºF night
and his natural coat hadn't grown out yet.
By next year he'll be the warmest of the bunch!

  1. (Susan) Okay. Yesterday I griped about it being 70 degrees on 2/15. Today? 2/17? It is TWENTY-EIGHT DEGREES! Our climate is really messed up. Yesterday our local weather forecasters had predicted massive dangerous thunderstorms for most of the day. They never materialized. The predictions are hardly ever accurate now.

    1. In fairness, the weather predictions are far better now than they were in the 1960's. But certainly the overall weather patterns are less stable now.

    2. I have lived in the Chicago area for more than a half-century, and extreme temperature swings have always been a fact. I particularly remember one time Penny and I were visiting Chinatown and the temperature dropped 10 degrees in the time it took us to walk to the "L" stop.

    3. Susan you are correct...the atmosphere is offering us less protection now, so our hot days are hotter and our cold days may yet be much colder. We had 60 and -22 in the same week, up here. It's definitely nuts. Yes, there have been some odd moments in any given year, but we are having many more of them now, shifting growing seasons, mutating frogs, stressing wildlife and plant life, and now humans. It's like the difference between sometimes having a bad day and having full-on mood swings.

  3. Best way to save money? Just eat two meals, says the Wall Street Journal! [Click]

“Oh, why don’t you save all the money you earn?
If I just didn’t eat, I’d have money to burn.
    Halleluja, I’m a bum
    Halleluja, bum again;
    Halleluja, give us a handout,
    To revive us again.”

    1. Money is a material or electronic token of a figment of the imagination--entirely worthless unless spent. When the tokens were fabricated out of precious metals, they had an intrinsic value because they could be made into ornaments or tools. Nixon put an end to that in 1971, but somehow the significance still has not registered. That Putin is trading gold to evade the sanctions does not register, either.
Donald Trump is giving away free gold bars for the cost of shipping (which is not identified) to get people's addresses, email, and phone numbers so they can be contacted whenever. It is a sucker play. Yahoo should be ashamed to be running the ads.

    2. These days I eat just two "real" meals a day, sometimes fut not always with dried fruit and nuts in between. I never thought of this as saving money. Especially since I always have salad with dinner.

    3. Eating two or three or four meals a day doesn't speak to WHAT you're eating and how much it costs. Wil's Mom was an expert at it, having ten children to feed. She had a two-week shopping list and meal plan. She shopped every two weeks and made exactly the same meals, in the same order, on a two week rotation. She knew exactly how much she needed of each product and when to use it to have the best value. AND, she was a good cook!

    1. The ways it's different are good to know. However, we still lost more than 3000 citizens to Covid deaths in just the last month. Covid is still a 9/11 tragedy every month, and we hardly ever hear about it anymore. What must that be like (for example) for the loved ones who watched nightly news over the first two years of Covid and saw the names, photos and bios of the folks recently dead from Covid, while their loved one, equally dead and mourned, is completely ignored. I guess it only counts if you had no prior health issues and had the good sense to die earlier in the pandemic.

    1. At least somebody somewhere is doing time. How about some BIG names, though? I'm sick and tired of the big wigs being free for years before their case finally gets to court. Then they get at best a slap on the wrist and go home. We all have the right to a FAIR trial and have the right to s SPEEDY trial. I suggest that in egregious cases that affect the whole nation, the country itself deserves some fairness and all due speed. I'm not suggesting we haul people out and hang them, but there really ought to be limits to how long justice can be put off.
