Maybe not quite that low, but likely at least -21 or -22. So far it's only -20ºF. With the wind blowing 14mph from the NW with gusts to 31mph, we currently have a windchill of -43ºF.
Needless to say, we are INSIDE and staying snug. I spent the last two days making candles (a great occupation in cold weather!), ending with 24pairs of hand-dipped candles and 40 votives! This was my first year making votives. FUN!

At 8 pm the temperature on the summit of Mount Washington NH was down to -46 F. The coldest temperature ever recorded at this station (-47 F on January 29, 1934). Records at Mount Washington Observatory go back to 1933. The 96 mph winds (gusts to 127 mph) are producing a wind chill of -108 F.

My brother was rotated from Saigon to Fairbanks (during the summer) just in time for an unusually cold and snowy winter. A little way up the road, in Circle, it hit 82F below zero. It typically gets down to 60 below and just stays there for a long time. Ice fog all winter long. Come summer it was remarkable to see the gold dust glinting in the sand at the margins of the rivers. ---Alan
My brother told me that the first time it got down to 20 below, he and some other non-coms were talking about it in the basement rec room of the bachelor officers' quarters and they decided that no matter HOW cold it got, it couldn't really be any worse than that. He added that they had a lot to learn. Among other things, they were issued snowshoes to get from their quarters to the bus stop. At a certain temperature, the bus turned into a fully tracked vehicle. There are steam lines laid alongside all the water lines on the base to keep the latter from freezing, and the fire hydrants are covered with upside-down oil drums with handles welded onto them, so they don't have to be located and dug out of the snow and ice when or if needed. Oh, and triple-paned windows everywhere. I think it has been surpassed recently, but at that time the lowest temperature ever recorded in North America was 84F below zero, somewhere in the Yukon. ---Alan

I think the reportage and reactions sound silly. Certainly satellites can see as well.
