    1. It occurs to me to wonder if someone could make a go of a dark lantern manufactory on Sark . . . maybe using Cornish tin, if that should still be available.

  6. "Democrats in Disarray"? How about "Republicans in Rout".

  7. I wouldn't exactly say the Republicans lost in 2022. They did take the House, even if by not as much as their more optimistic members had hoped. Democrats didn't do as well as I'd hoped, so I'd call it a split decision.

  8. This afternoon we were taking a walk on our street and encountered gardeners we used to routinely greet--or to be precise, the wife and a younger man, maybe a son, but her husband wasn't there. My Spanish was good enough to ask if he was well, and it turned out that he had passed away; I was also able to comfort her in Spanish. It was not any of our business why or how he passed away, but I shouldn't be surprised if it were Covid. He was vigorous, probably in his 50's, and they were dead set against being vaccinated.

    2. How unutterably sad, Alan.
      Condolences to the gardener family
      and their neighbours.

    3. I don't know that it was coronavirus--it is just a guess about something that is no business of mine. But he seemed so vigorous.

    1. Now that we have our mortgage paid off, I am thinking about replacing the roof (which is showing its age) with photoelectric material from GAF (the big roofing material manufacturer). They have photoelectric roofing that goes on together with, and at the same time, as composition roofing. The state has leaned on the big electric utilities to tie home energy generation and storage into the grid. Our house has a lot of solar potential. The roofing material we have has not lived up to its advertising--looks great (similar to slate), but is not as durable as it was touted to be.

  10. In re Putin, I think he should flee into exile; that has a long history--as does assassination.

  11. The College Essay Is Dead [Click] “Nobody is prepared for how AI will transform academia.” One item in particular irks me— the author seems to think C.P.Snow invented (or recognized) the idea of the “Two Cultures,” humanistic and scientific, in the 1950’s. But that was well developed in the time and case of Leonoardo da Vinci and his contemporaries—and surely long, long before.

    1. The idea significantly reflected the structure of the British educational system at the time. In the equivalent of our seventh grade you had a choice of taking Greek or chemistry. And that choice determined your entire academic career going forward

    2. This was what led to the idea that there was a sharp and absolute distinction between the two cultures. Never the twain shall meet. Da Vinci wouldn't have fit into this meme.

    3. Da Vinci was first and foremost of the social class of architects; the elitists of his day scorned him because he wasn't conversant in Latin, Greek and ancient poetry written in those languges. I remember the elitists' story of the Renaissance. It goes that a member of their class was traveling through Spain, and at an inn he discovered a book by the "forgotten" Roman architect Vitruvius. It was probably accidentally left by a traveling architect, who didn't figure it was worth going back to recover, since it was so readily available; it was reprinted many times in the middle ages.

  12. Someone said this past week on CNN..."Republicans are in disarray; Democrats are in array."

The Republicans definitely lost this year. When was the last time an Administration lost so little at midterms? Add to that that their power is waning, and they have no platform.
