One does hope somebody over there has a way to halt the nuclear option.

    2. The Soviet nuclear arms control system was safer than that of the United States; I expect that the same basic system still exists. And there are reports that the US has explicitly warned Russia through diplomatic channels-- more than once.

    1. Excellent; and there is continuing promise of much milder chemotherapy agents.

  3. Yesterday I was feeling more slothful than normal; it might have been a response to the new Covid vaccine. But this morning I am feeling definitely perkier. If so, it is a very small price to pay.

    1. Putin needs nothing short of a miracle to avoid a devastating defeat in Ukraine [Click] “Troops melting away and Russians fleeing abroad to avoid mobilisation doesn’t augur well for Putin’s latest gamble”

Putin’s nuclear threat shows a desperate man out of options [Click] “Using such weapons has no tactical purpose – it would only lose the Russian president support at home and abroad.” I agree with much of what the writer says, but not his ultimate [implied] conclusion that part of Ukraine must be surrendered to Russia. I think that economic pressure must be maintained, leading to the economic and political disintegration of the Russian empire. I think that should be well and obviously underway within a matter of months.

  5. We have completed removing the cap stems from the last of this year's raisins, and are soaking them in water preparatory to a final short drying in the oven. Then it's just a matter of sealing them in containers and allowing the moisture to equilibrate.

  6. I am truly more and more surprised [impressed?] that Putin has not yet fled Russia. Then again, Nicholas II was sainted by the Russian Orthodox Church-- maybe that is what Putin is aiming for. Just sayin'.

  7. Each of the following two videos is about an hour long; I found them fascinating.

Neanderthal Apocalypse | Full Science Documentary - Part 1 [Click] I gather that the proposition that “Homo heidelbergensis” was a common ancestor of Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis is outmoded; there is not even a type sample of H. heidelbergensis—just a single jawbone.

A Super Volcano Killed the Neanderthals | Full Science Documentary - Part 2 [Click] This looks pretty convincing. I was moved to look up the Long Valley Caldera supervolcano, which is on the other side of the mountains from us and erupted about 760,000 years ago. Amazingly, there was one pyroclastic flow that surmounted the Sierra Nevada and entered the valley of the San Joaquin River, that flows just below our house. I was not able to find a map of said pyroclastic flow, but assume it only made it into the upper reaches of the river drainage.

    1. My ancestors got offed by a supervolcano! Wow! What a way to go.

(I love Vermont. Not a volcano in sight!)

That's fascinating, Alan, that it happened right near your home, though!!!
