    1. Thanks for the thought, Alan, but I simply don't do video.

    1. I have been following Illinois cases closely. They have inched up from about 9 per 100,000 population to a bit above 10. Still pretty low, but the trend is concerning. ICU cases, however, are still near record lows.

    2. About the same here--very low hospitalizations, very very low ICU cases. Tomorrow we can (and will) make appointments for our second booster shots.

    3. The Europeans are recommending six months rather than four months after the first booster, and as long as cases remain low I'm inclined to wait.

    4. We got our 2nd booster shots on Saturday. Monday marked 6 months since my first. Close enough.

  5. In the jungle primary to replace Devin Nunes for the balance of his term, almost all votes have been tallied. Turnout only about 15%. The Democrat I voted for is in second place, not far behind the Republican winner, so will make the runoff.

    1. The idea that children can't interpret facial expressions because they have been mostly at home during the pandemic strikes me as not quite right. Were their family members always wearing masks too? Or how come my children, who home schooled, never had a problem interpreting facial expressions?

  9. Watching a film about communism, I realised I had been lied to as a child in China [Click] “I was taught that Mao and Lenin’s followers were always the heroes of history. This movie showed me you could view them with fear and hatred.” Interesting how she remarks on still liking some old Socialist songs. My father’s stepfather was a member of the US Socialist Party, and what he told my father continues to influence me. Where I grew up the IWW was still remembered, and often admired. It would take me a little work to recall all the words to the Socialist (not the IWW) English version of The Internationale, but I expect I could do it; having become old I often have difficulty recalling things I know perfectly well, but in time I can do it unaided. It’s a dandy marching song. The movie sounds interesting; I might see if I can find a copy--at least I should be able to find a trailer on YouTube.

    2. Nobody had heard of the IWW where I grew up. But the railroad unions, almost as long-standing, were a natural and normal part of everyday life.

    3. Several railway unions predated the IWW. Gene Debs [Click] was active in several railway unions, as well as being a founder of the IWW later on (Chicago 1905).

  11. Well, it's been a tough day for family news. The retirement party the kids had planned for us has to be postponed because our adorable 6 year old grandson has tested positive for Covid. The gathering was to be Sunday and we were headed to Maine Friday to see 12 year old Granddaughter's school play. We'll have to miss the play, and we hope she continues to test negative and doesn't have to miss it herself. The party has been postponed...tentatively 'til the 23rd, assuming they are past it.

THEN, we learned that 3rd DIL's brother-in-law (close family...we were at the wedding) had a boating accident today. He teaches fly fishing and leads expeditions. Well, he was out in his boat with another guide and that guide's customer, and the other guide made a bad split-second decision. The boat capsized, two made it to a small island and were later rescued...including our family member, but the customer had not yet been found last I knew. Water temperature at the time was 36ºF. So it doesn't bode well. Our guy's boat was also lost.

    Very harsh.

    1. Actually, we're still getting information and it now seems to NOT have been the customer, but the other guide who drowned. He tried to save the boat, instead of just getting to safety. As a guide, he should have known better.

    2. One should never underestimate the strength of the tendency to behave normally in abnormal circumstances. All in all, quite a concatenation of misfortunes.

    3. Still more clarification coming in. We think they were all on the island fishing when the boat began to drift away. The other guide jumped in to try to get it, but never resurfaced. We think the boat never capsized, even though the TV news said it did. Because all the rest of it doesn't fit unless they were all on the island to begin with. Anyway, it's super sad. We hope they recover the man's body soon and that the boat is found somewhere downstream.

This happened where two rivers come together, so there was probably an undertow.

    4. He probably drowned because with the cold water shock he likely experienced an involuntary inhalation...underwater.

    5. If memory serves me well, it is usually children or teenagers falling head first into very cold water who survive for extended periods of time without breathing--a sort of atavistic response. But rivers are dangerous, no way around that. When I was a teenager I once pulled a very risky stunt in a creek, but got away with it.

    6. The thing is...this person was an angler and guide. He knew better than to jump into such frigid water. But he acted on an impulse to try to save his friend's boat and not have them all be stranded on an island. Fine intent...but, you know, boats are replaceable.
