One Year Ago...
The Vermont teacher who knitted Bernie's mittens was stunned at the recognition they engendered. She has teamed up with Vermont Teddy Bear Factory to make mittens based on her design, and a portion of the proceeds are going to charity. During the past year, there have been a number of fund raisers with her mittens which also raised money for the Vermont Food Bank and other charities. VPR spoke with her today: https://www.vpr.org/vpr-news/2021-01-21/meet-jen-ellis-the-woman-behind-bernie-sanders-inauguration-day-mittens

What a strange notion. The U.S. was never designeed to BE governed. Self-government implies a dispersion of power to be assembled in times of need.
DeleteGranted, self-government conflicts with thee Christian commitment to original sin. Which is why the Constitution is radical and at odds with what authoritarians expect.
I suspect the founders were just looking at compromise that would not raise too much ire. So, a lot of critical matters were left out and the commeercial class. which had instigated the separation from the crown, proceeded to advantage itself.
That has now proved disastrous because three hundred million now refuse to be consistently abused. This, I suspect, is what the proponents of the status quo, the factions, have not yet realized. So, we have Democrats and Republicans continuing to act as if they were the only choice.
In the Georgia special Senate election there were FIVE parties and TWENTY candidates on the ballot. Nobody got 50% of the votes.
For the other senate seat, Republicans offered only one candidate, while Democrats fielded SEVEN. That the voters like real choices still has not registered with the press and the pundits.
Fact is that the Class III Senate seat required a run-off because the Libertarian got over 115,000 votes. And the reason Biden got more votes that Trump was because Jorgensen got over 62,000.
There was a time when Perot was referred to as a spoiler. Now all those other candidates are being ignored in hopes they will go away. Ain't gonna happen.
I was always hoping to make civic engagement a national passtime. Did Republicans think people were going to get bored?
I'm not sure Republicans think all that much; many just react.
DeleteFortunately, alongside Christian theology around Original Sin, there grew a Celtic Christian theology of the essential goodness of Creation and of humanity made in the image of God.
