  1. Re the thread photo--- what is that single-story buttressed square structure on the near side of the barn? Another design of silo, perhaps?

    1. I’ve always thought such to be a kind of horizontal silo. But to be sure I checked with famous Dean farmer Phil*in*Iowa. He writes:

“It is a bunker silo, where silage is stored, after being packed and covered. Those are the walls for the "pack".

    2. I have seen simmilar silos around here, but with just two walls. Not being an expert in such things, I didn't know the specific name. I learn something every day if I'm not careful; thanks to Phil.

And then there is the problem that ballots have no monetary value and, besides, the whole enterprise failed.
Failur, whether by accident or design in not a crime.

    1. The problem is that the Constituion is solely focused on property rights and civic obligations. It has nothing to say about human rights, which seem to have been forgotten between the Declaration and the adoption of the Constiturion. So, if one is to be an originalist, one protects property and, in the case of fetuses which, as future children are considered property, paternal claims (fathers being the presumed objectors to the termination of a pregnancy) have to predominate.
That the state, in the interest of health and safety has been licensed medical/surgical providers has opened the door to serving their interests. That hospitals have been most keen to prevent the operation of "rogue" clinics that provide services at a lower cost has not been well covered. But, a shrinking obstetric patient load has been a concern for half a century. This past year, had it not been for migrants, the country would not have seen an increase in population and, at current rate, the global population is expected to peak in less than thirty years.
If growth is not to be the signifier of progress, what is?
Gee, we might actually have to focus on human rights and welfare.

    2. I discovered a while back that only a century ago many states still used the Common Law principle that the children of a marriage are the property of the father.

I checked his first big hit, Bat Out of Hell [Click] and can't say as it floats my boat.

  7. The Simplest Way to Sell More Electric Cars in America [Click] “Decades-old laws that protect car dealers are keeping the U.S. stuck in the gas-powered past.” Given a practical choice, I think that many people would prefer not to do business with a car dealership, beyond inspecting the wares.

    1. If I were to purchase a car online from a company in Nevada (e.g.) and arrange for it to be delivered to my driveway, shouldn't that be considered a sale in Nevada? But I would want to visit a local or at least semi-local showroom. I wonder if the dealer protection laws prohibit non-dealer showrooms.

    2. Ford currently has a setup where one can reserve their vehicle online, but then needs to choose a dealership for that vehicle to be delivered to. This is because there is some cleanup and final inspection needed after the vehicle has been on a train and (for us East Coasters) an 18 wheeler. And I'm sure the car companies won't gain any friends in the industry if they bypass the dealers altogether.

  8. So, we are slowly cottoning to the fact that almost all federal and state redulation was directed towards "protecting" commeercial enterprise. The "free market" is peeobably the biggeest hoax perpetrated on the American people, next to the fiction that dollars first have to be collected from the public before they can be spent on public services. Now we are taking a more functional tack.

    1. The contention that the Supreme Court recognized corporations as people in a particular case, which has been cited again and again by the Supreme Court and others, is a complete fiction. It was stated by a Speaker of the House and went unchallenged. Or at least so I understand.

    1. This happened outside an Orthodox Synagogue. There were 3 children together. The woman told them Hitler should have killed them all. The 8 year old boy said he would protect his little sister. And that woman said "We know where you live" and next time none of you will survive. { !!! } Then she spat on him and left. This is the element in society we are up against. I am thoroughly sickened.

    https://www.wcax.com/2022/01/21/proposal-2-would-close-loophole-vermonts-constitution-allowing-slavery/

Mind you, Vermont was the first state in the Union to outlaw slavery. It's the wording that needs tweaking, to make it clear. And with all the nutjobs out there, it's a good thing to take care of the details right now. Our legislature is also securing a woman's right to choose, etc., ahead of the next election. Fortunately, our Republican Governor is likely to sign everything like that.

    1. I can understand the difficulties of the people writing the original constitution, since indentures were a common method of apprenticeship back in those days. I can also understand that many people these days don't realize that. Even today internships are often unpaid, although the interns are at liberty to just quit.

  16. Penny update, and it's not good. Marcus and I met with her hospital caregivers in her room this afternoon. They had hoped that a couple of dialyses would set her kidneys on the road to recovery, but it hasn't happened. Indeed, the second dialysis had to be cut short because it was causing her blood pressure to fluctuate. So they recommend that there be no more dialysis. If her kidneys don't recover on their own in the next week or so, she will be transferred to hospice.

While we were there, Penny was a bit more awake and responsive than she had been when we called the ambulance, but not nearly as much as she had been two weeks ago. I think this may support the reocommendation.

I had been aware that decline was inevitable, and I had been specially concerned once I learned of her kidney disease in October. This is sooner than expected, but not really a total and absolute surprise. Not like somebody dropping dead of a heart attack.

This is the time we always wish didn't have to come along, even while we know we all have to face it at some point. I'm sad the time may have come for you and Penny. What precious days you have right now. Sacred space.

May Penny rally for some quality time together yet. May she not have too much pain. And may you have the support you need for this time. Who is with you? Is Marcus still around?

      Gentlenesses to you...

    3. Thanks for the sympathies and good wishes. Yes, Marcus lives with us as he always had. If Penny comes home (details of hospice care as yet unclear) he will probably be more involved in her care than I am.
