Let 'em eat cake!

  1. My whole life and every day starts with "But first..." There is always work to be done before I can do the work I intended to do. Cooking? Son left stack of dirty plates on the stove. So I can cook "but first" I need to remove the dishes. And it goes on that way every day all the time.

    And I'm making vax card holders for my family. Started with Son #1's first. I had a little "Baby Yoda" fabric left over that I used because he's a fan of The Mandelorian. Sadly there were some problems and the fabric was ruined. I was reading Quiltville's Quips and Snips this morning and she mentioned some novelty fabric printed with rolls of toilet paper. Ah ha! I have some of that fabric. So now *that* will be his vax card holder with a note inside that I stole from a meme...remember when trump was president and he was so full of sh!t the whole country ran out of toilet paper? I only put novelty fabric on the inside and nice decorous solid fabric on the outside. Son #2 only likes "funeral colors", so he won't get any novelty fabric.

    Oh, and I still hate everybody but you guys and my family.

    1. Oh lordy--I hadn't heard that Trump joke, Susan. Thanks--but one must be careful with who one shares it with!

    2. I had the idea of a temporary tattoo of my vaccination card on my forearm, but there isn't much point in it. I found instructions on how to make a temporary tattoo using a laser printer, though. I wouldn't swear to it, but I think they made a mirror image of the desired tattoo, cut it out and put it on the skin (taped in place?) and applied rubbing alcohol to transfer it to the skin. Or something like that.

    3. I hadn't heard the Trump joke either. Got a real chuckle out of it.

    4. Oh, my gosh, Susan! I hadn't laughed so hard all day!! Thanks for making me laugh on my birthday.

      And I sure hear you about the "But first" lifestyle. As a woman and a mom I have so often set aside what I *want* to do until I get the things I *have* to do first. Small wonder I haven't finished the book or quilt I last started.

  2. “Cooler” today hereabouts; predicted high 95F, light wind, partially cloudy now, clearing later. Air is clearer, although close to the horizon it is a little brownish from smoke and we cannot see the foothills. AQI 49 = “good.” UV index has fallen from 9 to 7, still pretty high. Predicted afternoon humidity a little higher than usual, 25/26% in the afternoon. Good raisin drying weather; I estimate about two days more for our raisins to be finished, maybe three days for the laggards.

    1. After the grapes are well and truly raisins, then we pull off all the cap stems by hand (quite laborious), sort into three sizes, wash lightly, and dry in the oven. Then package them in air-tight containers to equalize the moisture.

  3. In re California gubernatorial recall election (concludes next Tuesday), the Berkeley-IGS Poll shows Newsom ahead 60.1% to 38.5%. [Click] The Berkeley-IGS poll is far and away the most reliable in California; it is the successor to the Field Poll.

    1. Oops--somehow the masters of the Internet let me see that story from the Sacramento Bee, but won't now. I will find the Berkeley-IGS poll itself (which will editorialize less).

    2. “In the early going it was probably more about whether they liked Newsom or not. It was personalized,” said Mark DiCamillo, director of the poll, told the Times. “By attacking his challenger, which is Elder, and framing it as ‘Look at what you’ll get if you vote for this guy’ ... I think that really won the day.”

      Newsom also had a huge fundraising advantage (about then times the total for all his forty-odd challengers combined), but held off on spending it until people started paying attention to the election, which I thought would prove a good strategy.
      =========================
      “With less than a week to go until the California recall election, some Republicans are falsely claiming that votes are rigged in favor of Democrats and suggesting, without evidence, that Gov. Gavin Newsom can only win with fraudulent votes.”

      “A link on Elder’s campaign website, labeled as “report election incident,” takes users to a form to report incidents of voter fraud and sign a petition to investigate the results of the recall.” Is this worth the trouble of drowning it in false reports?

      Ditto this: “The California Republican Party has not made any false claims of voter fraud, but is urging voters to report any “suspicious activity” in the upcoming election on its website.”
      ==========================
      BTW, this election is 100% hand-marked and signed paper ballots, each one with a unique barcode, so if one is damaged or lost, it will be eliminated and replaced with one having a different unique barcode.

    3. For comparison, here are the 2018 California gubernatorial election results:

      Newsom (D) 61.9%
      Cox (R) 38.1%

    “Eighteen Trump administration appointees serving on the advisory boards of military service academies have either resigned from their positions or were terminated, following a request from the Biden administration earlier this week,” the Washington Post reports.

  6. I note with interest that California's new US Senator, Alex Padilla, issues far better quality form letters to constituents who write to him than Senator Feinstein ever has.

    1. Unfortunately it is behind a paywall, but I could sneak around said complication. This is one of those rare sports stories I really enjoy; Mike Royko must be smiling, too.

    1. My heart aches for my 6 friends who are in harm's way on the Avalon Peninsula. Hoping they somehow come through the hurricane okay, being on the west (worst) side of the storm, which has a 70 mile wide eye! The peninsula itself is 60miles wide. The Isthmus that connects Avalon to the main portion of Newfoundland is only 4 miles wide.

  10. 💖 Thank you, Folks!! I've been having a very low-key and gentle birthday, which I am grateful for. We went to a Farmer's Market and a few other little (outdoor) shops. Last night I made brownies for my neighbour, who is my pre-teen birthday buddy. Today I made a cake for the birthday this weekend of the owner of the Sailing School. A lovely woman named Mary used to do the honours. After she died I took up the tradition in Mary's honour. The funny thing is that I simply bought a cake for me. LOL!

    Lots of notes and cards and little gifts have arrived. Lots of sweetness in this day. Your notes add to the joy.
