So, Cat, please be assured that you aren't the only one who sometimes has a moan here...
Every year I feel tension around my impending birthday. It has nothing to do with age. It's simply that there is always a tension between people asking me what I really want for my birthday (as a gift and how to spend the day) and the reality that if I say what I'd like it is likely to meet some difficulty in pulling it off. That's only a concern at all because I end up feeling either guilty or miffed about it. That is, I am the Mom around here and I make sure everyone has a nice birthday. But if my having a birthday that I design is at all difficult for someone else I feel frustrated and then I feel guilty. I don't need to be the Queen, I just want to celebrate. If folks would just plan something nice and invite me, then I wouldn't have to feel the tension in advance and the guilt if it's hard for someone to participate. This probably isn't completely coherent (it's nearly 2:00am here), but I wanted to write it down amongst kind souls, because it has taken me years and years to articulate this at all. I always get caught in the tension between what I'd like to do and what I need to do to ensure it's a good time for everyone.
Maybe that is at least partially the natural result of having a lot of close family and friends, listener. Aside from my immediate family (wife and daughter) I can't imagine anyone will give a hoot about my passing.
We sure will, Alan! We still miss JC and TC and it's clear that your passing would leave a HUGE hole here. We wouldn't know half of what's going on the in world, and would miss your take on things, your playful humour, your wink and dash, and just the contribution of your presence.
Alan~ Certainly you would be missed here. But I am in pretty much the same situation. I would be briefly missed here and on my book discussion groups, but no one else outside my immediate family would more than barely notice. I have a couple of cousins and my wife has a sister, but we aren't particularly close either geographically or emotionally.
We'd notice, Bill! Are you okay with having a small circle when the time comes? Sometimes a small circle is highly significant. They say we really only have a handful of best friends in our lifetime.
This makes me realise that we each need a way to designate someone to inform the blog if something happens to us. Idears?
Actually, that was the larger of the two "minutes" numbers I found, and the smaller number was literally 38 years' worth...but without the leap days figured in. The larger number I used included the leap days. Better add 1440min! LOL.
Judge reverses order forcing hospital to give ivermectin to COVID-19 patient [Click] It isn’t completely clear, but toward the end of the article it sounds like the guy has already been given one course of ivermectin to please his wife, and the court order was for a second course. There is a slight nod to the fact that neither judges nor hospitals are free to practice medicine.
Well, judges have no enforcement powers anyway. Practically speaking, behavior can only be restrained, not coerced. Corporations can be ordered to perform certain actions on pain of having their charter or licnse revoked, but then the plaintiff would have to prove the efficaty of what was being ordered. Judges, typically, only decide which of the opponents make the better case and which advocate is most persuasive. While courts demand lots of evidence and paper-work, decisions still come down to the credibility of advocates and witnesses. Which is why many people get convicted of crimes they did not commit. Defense attornies push guilty pleas to stay in the good graces of the legal fraternity.
Rats! I was just trying not to litter. Saw a duplicate post of mine yesterday and deleted one, not aware that the one I chose to delete, naturally, was the one with comments. Didn't see the comments, promise! If I had, I would have deleted the other one.
So, Category 3 Hurricane Larry is steaming up through the Atlantic and is looking to either graze the coast of Newfoundland as a Category 1 hurricane, or actually plow into its Avalon peninsula (where 6 of my friends live). 11 years ago this month, Hurricane Igor, which was downgraded to a Tropical Storm prior to blowing by just off the coast, gave as much devastation to the area as Irene did to Vermont the following August. So, Environment Canada's forecast for Friday when Larry is supposed to blow through? "Chance of Showers." !!!

DeleteWe will.
DeleteYou cannot ensure that other people have a good time. I, for example, despise celebrations, but occasionally participate as an act of charity.

On a happier note, today is (not adjusting for longitude) our 38th wedding anniversary; so far, so good. We will go out for lunch.
ReplyDelete🎉WOW! 🤩 HAPPY 38th ANNIVERSARY, MIYOKO AND ALAN! ✨💛💛✨
DeleteCongratulations on celebrating 19,986,480 minutes together!
Somewhat more than that since we were married on the other side of the International Date Line (in Tokyo).
DeleteCongratulations. Hope the lunch was nice.

I was wondering why I didn't remember this Adlai Stevenson. His term as Senator almost precisely corresponded to the time I was in California.
DeleteI hadn't realized that there were four Adlai Stevensons.
