    1. Those sucks over-winter on the pond across from our house. There's usually a flock of a dozen or more. The water is brackish (tidal) and perhaps not conducive for reproducing. Their coming and going signals the coming of fall and spring.

    1. "[Republicans] just seem to consider ‘defunding the police’ a sort of metaphysical position that has nothing to do with actual police-department budgets.” From what I can see, this is more than half true. There are calls for police reform and for spending money on other things to reduce crime and deal with it more effectively, but this does not necessarily or even typically call for reducing the police department's budget.

    2. Re NYC mayoral race: New York doesn't start counting absentee ballots until the deadline for their arrival has passed. We saw that in November.

    3. Absentee ballots were not due until June 28th. There would be no point in counting them until they are due. There are, it seems, traditions in election administration, as we were advised by our local administrator when he explained why votes cast early were not counted until election day. In the past, if the number of absentee ballots received was not sufficiently great to make a difference, they were not even counted. That was what happened in Florida in 2000 and then Gore exacerbated the situation by wanting only some counties recounted, theregy setting up a violation of equal treatment scenario. Of course, in 1992, the Clinton/Gore did not even bother to campaign in Florida. The closest they got was Valdosta, Georgia.
The response of the main political parties had been to divide the electorate between them under the umbrella of 'take it or leave it.' In 1988 Dukakis campaign had no presence in Florida, other than a bunch of boring position papers. We made the mistake of asking the campaign for permission to put up our own get out the vote radio ads and were denied. None of the carreer political operatives were keen on having more people voting. It was about then that the evangelicals decided to take over the Republican party.

  6. Clyburn endorses rival to Nina Turner in Ohio special election [Click] That activates my outside agitator gene. I think having someone in Congress who has shown she is in favor of protecting men’s reproductive health is a fine idea.

  10. “The New York City mayor’s race plunged into chaos on Tuesday night when the city Board of Elections released a new tally of votes in the Democratic mayoral primary, and then removed the tabulations from its website after citing a ‘discrepancy,’” the New York Times reports. Maybe they could count better if they got a taste of the lash? Are those yahoos doing the counting by hand?

    1. around 10:30 p.m., the board finally released a statement, explaining that it had failed to remove sample ballot images used to test its ranked-choice voting software. When the board ran the program, it counted “both test and election night results, producing approximately 135,000 additional records,” the statement said. The ranked-choice numbers, it said, would be tabulated again.
