What's interesting is that amid the pandemic, while some are backing away from religion, many are turning more toward spirituality and even drawing closer to their faith traditions. It could be a real blessing, along the lines of: "some of those shepherds pastured themselves on their sheep, so God has come out against them and scattered God's people of faith." Many are being drawn to something of personal substance and support, so different than outdated "everybody think alike" styles.
Happy Monday! Today, we're taking a look at President Biden's new infrastructure plan, as well as the opening salvos from Republicans who have launched an all-out assault against the package. Politico calls the burgeoning fight a potential threat to Biden's "bipartisan brand." But a closer look at the GOP's first round of attacks has me more concerned about the party's understanding—or lack thereof—of what infrastructure is in the first place.
Thankfully, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg hit the cable news shows on Sunday to unpack the apparent confusion. "I heard the governor of South Dakota recently saying, ‘This isn’t infrastructure—it's got money for pipes,'" Buttigieg told George Stephanopoulos. "Well, we believe that pipes are infrastructure, because you need water to live, and too many families now live with the threat of lead poisoning."
Yes, as my colleague Becca Andrews writes, you need water to live—a concept Republicans just can't seem to grasp. Here's to hoping Buttigieg remains available in the coming weeks to explain the hard stuff.
“You have 51 or 52 corporations of the Fortune 500 that haven’t paid a single penny in taxes for three years. Come on, man. Let’s get real.” — President Joe Biden, quoted by Washington Post.
