At about 1:30am I got my April Fools moment, when our cats brought in from the (screened in!) back porch a tiny brown toad, only about 1.5" long. As I shooed them back and reached for a yogurt container to pop over the poor fellow, one of them lunged and chased him underneath the couch! What a fine mess as I was just heading to bed...! But with some care, I moved the couch a little and the toad jumped out and behind the side table. A few minutes later and the poor fellow was back outside, with a set of two propped containers for shelter if desired during the coming night of snow. I would not be surprised if the toad simply came back under the door onto the porch to weather out the night. But at least the cats are in and the cat door is locked for the time being. I've named him Potter, because he might like a good pot in the garden to shelter under. He could also use an invisibility cloak!

Gov. Phil Scott is not permitting college students in Vermont who are out-of-state students to be vaccinated in Vermont. The cases at the colleges are going up. So he's getting some serious pushback to this. I hope he can alter his view soon, because the students are having a lot more cases in the region.
Summary of a column: In the past, infrastructure has been paid for with user fees such as gas taxes, which are unpopular and grist for political opponents. But the Trump tax cuts for the wealthy and large corporations provides a rare opportunity. Few people will be adversely affected by redirecting those monies into infrastructure. And since they were deficit-financed, the budget won’t be affected either. Indeed, squeezing the wealthy seems to make the whole deal even more popular. So if it can be pulled off, it’s a three-fur: a big legislative accomplishment, that’s paid for, and that unwinds unpopular tax cuts that Republicans expended a huge amount of political capital to pull off—all at one blow. Not just tempting for the Dems, but irresistible.
Last night was that kind of night for me, and I had just finished checking Mercury retrograde when you asked, lol!
In 2021, Mercury will be in apparent retrograde motion during the folowing ranges of dates: January 30 to February 20. May 29 to June 22. September 27 to October 17.
By then, too tired to keep trying, so went to bed. . . .
So I'll be able to take the train to Columbus at last. Still no Chattanooga choo-choo, but train to Nashville and bus to Chattanooga could be doable. And actual train service to Phoenix is overdue.
I suspected there would be something in there for you, Bill. I sure wouldn't mind if they were to restore direct service from Fresno to Los Angeles, but for now I suppose transfer to a bus going over the hills is really OK.
And actually I have now seen a map of the proposed routes. Chattanooga is on the Nashville-Savannah route, but getting there by train would involve transfers in DC and Savannah.
GREAT to see that the Burlington to Montreal route is being restored!! I used to take the train up there when I was doing seminary studies through Montreal Diocesan Theological College.
