Under way on its own power; some sources say it is being towed, but photos and videos show that is not true. It will take some time to repair the damage to the canal.
From what I hear from various clergy members, their numbers are dropping too...and the main reason is that the international church decisions run contrary to the culture of the USA, especially as regards being open and affirming toward all persons equally. One example is the recent divisions in the Methodist Church. At very least some US clergy are leaving one denomination in favour of a more liberal communion, such as the Episcopal Church.
Interestingly, it's always the churches in Africa that refuse the more liberal ways. When Roman Catholic nuns beg for the priesthood to include women, it's the African and other parts of the Church that say no. The Pope has an impossible task to straddle the needs of one group while not losing another group.
In my view, the loss of people from churches has far less to do with liturgy or beliefs and more to do with interior strife. Of course, it has become less the fashion to admit belief in God. In our techno-society, with so much cruelty in the world, it really does sound absurd to suggest that there is an unseen entity that loves everyone. I find it helps to think of it more like the Mystery of God mingling with the mystery of myself. Much as I appreciate our increasing knowledge of science and emotion and all the rest, I fervently hope that there will remain something of deep interior moral courage, and faith and hope in the good and Love, that we never fully comprehend. Because once we human comprehend something, we are all about having power over it. And I sure don't want us "mere mortals" to be ultimately in charge. LOL. I'm all for mystery!
The large fraternal associations, such as the Elks, Odd Fellows, and Foresters, have also fallen on hard times-at least out here. I don't know if it is the same back East. But one of the underlying causes of the rise of the fraternal orders in the West was the historical shortage of women. TV might have something to do with it.
listener ~~ I was surprised by how much what you said resembles my own beliefs. I firmly disbelieve in God the Creator. But I do believe in a Moral Force urging all humans (all life?) toward the creation of a better world. I view this as equivalent to "that of God in every mane" even though the concepts differ at the more abstract theological levels.
I have heard of changes to the wind generators that considerably reduce bird kills. And of course gathering wave energy will not involve bird kills; some wave energy generators are even completely underwater. For that matter, one could build combined wind and wave powered generators.
