Status: I got the second Moderna shot yesterday. This morning I have a low fever, nausea and pain in my shot arm. I had planned for this so have food needs and responsibilities covered for today and tomorrow.
Sorry you're not feeling well, Susan, but very glad you got the second shot! By all accounts, such a reaction is good, indicating that your immune system is being activated which is, after all, the whole point. Hope you feel better soon.
Congratulations and *Ouch*. Here's hoping it's short lived and you have some good movies on hand.
I imagine it makes a difference to know when you're going to feel crummy and get to plan for it...even to choose to have it happen, for the greater good.
Susan, are you still able to keep down liquids and such? (I ask because if I have similar symptoms when it's my turn and if can't keep stuff down for 3 days, I will get shingles. Just thinking ahead.)
No problem with keeping liquids down. I'm not worried about it because I know the vaccine is doing what it's supposed to. Besides, it makes a handy-dandy excuse for me to just lie around.
I've been pushing that money is a figment of the imagination for a long time now. But, I think the word "figment" is off-putting. The first accounting tokens were actually fired clay balls included in shipments of grain, so the recipient could break them open and verify that what had been sent was what was got and nothing got lost along the way.
I have been arguing for some time that money is what you pay taxes with. And taxes are not figments of the imagination. Although I suppose you could argue that these days they are more technology than anything else.
The Republican Party Is Now in Its End Stages [Click] “The GOP has become, in form if not in content, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union of the late 1970s.” A very good argument, I think, and a better comparison than the Whig Party (which nevertheless demonstrates some uniquely American characteristics).
There is some evidence that the incidence of narcissism is growing and, while there is also evidence that it may be genetically linked, nobody knows why. Most of our mental peculiarities are still being tracked vis "instruments," the psychologists' word for questionaires that people answer about themselves, a topic about which many have no real awareness.
Who will clean up the 'billion-dollar mess' of abandoned US oilwells? [Click] Read a little farther; the estimate they give is 280 billion dollars, not one billion. I remember that there was an abandoned gas well in the gulch behind my childhood home that we used for lighting when the electricity went out. Probably the pipe or wellhead broke long ago. But I was told by my parents that there were gas and oil seems all through the mountains thereabouts.
We have got to stop evaluating activities in terms of figments of the imagination. If ordinary Americans can spend $70 Billion a year on lottery tickets, we can put people to work cleaning up and closing off oil and gas wells. We have more than enough people. All we are lacking is the will to make the exploiters clean up after themselves. At least we no longer hand them "depletion allowances."
It would be difficult and possibly dangerous work, but surely environmental clean up would, if implemented, provide a whole lot of jobs. We have to, as you say, make that work worthwhile and a priority.
Thanks, Puddle. I found that one and will be consulting it. So far it looks potentially quite helpful.
Bill, I was thinking of the continuum of Earth's history. That didn't begin with Man's taming of fire and first use of tools. Our "history" does, but I wondered where we fit into the big picture.
Thanks, Alan.
This is in aid of a new quiz project, "What Was New in the Old Stone Age." The idea isn't fully germinated yet, but it has potential.
During the Miocene and early Pliocene epochs, there was an increase in the phorusrhacid population size in South America, suggesting that, in that time frame, the various species flourished as predators in the savanna environment.
When the Isthmus of Panama emerged, 2.7 million years ago, carnivorous dogs, bears, and cats from North America were able to cross into South America, increasing competition.[28] (They had been preceded by procyonids as early as 7.3 million years ago.[5]) The population of phorusrhacids declined thereafter according to older hypotheses, suggesting that competition with newly arrived predators was a major contributor to their extinction.[29] Similar ideas have been considered for sparassodonts and for South America's terrestrial sebecid crocodilians.[30]
Kid's released from hospital, is on his way home. Girlfriend and her kid are with him. She has the high protein, very low carb guidelines, and will be cooking for him for the nonce. He's on a walker 'cause he's too wobbly to walk. Everyone sounded ecstatic. Me, too.
🌟This is HUGE!! Wonderful to hear he's improved so much that he's free. May he be really good about his rules. That has to be hard with quitting smoking too. Yet so vital. 🕯

ReplyDeleteSorry about that, Susan. Beats some of the alternatives by a country mile, but still unusual for a vaccine. Be well by sundown if you can.

DeleteEr, isn't there a comprehensive term for before the Old Stone Age? Google is being most unhelpful.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of human technology, no, there isn't. Because there was no human technology before the Paleolithic. Were you thinking in some other terms?

From Wikipedia:

"During the Early Pleistocene (2.58-0.8 Ma), archaic humans of the genus Homo originated in Africa and spread throughout Afro-Eurasia."
For one thing, I think the Isthmus of Panama was new in the Old Stone Age. That's a pretty big one, certainly.
