  2. Interview: The right man for the job; how bob Woodward pinned Trump to the page [Click] This seems to make some very cogent points, but at least as quoted, Mr. Woodward seems incoherent in places. I will have to go back over it to see if I can discern his meanings. The reference to The Guns of August particularly impresses me. The Proud Tower is of course also relevant. [Note: The Proud Tower and The Guns of August are available in a single volume.]

    1. I keep thinking about Woodward's comparison of today to 1914. I am of a mind to re-read The Proud Tower and then The Guns of August, probably sneaking The Riddle of the Sands in between. Is Trump our analogue of Wilhelm II? Will the fate of the Republican Party be like that of the Germans of Eastern Europe, forced out of the lands of their birth and ancestors?

  3. The weather report says AQI = 34, visibility 9 miles; I don't believe it. The sunlight has a yellowish cast and the far side of the river is fading out a bit. 0800 hrs here.

    1. The air seems to have cleared a bit, but the sky is covered with think clouds, unlike yesterday. We figure it will be all right to do some gardening late this afternoon.

  4. US airlines facing ‘Thelma and Louise’ moment as government aid set to expire [Click] “Funding used to protect workers will expire on 30 September, and airlines have already announced huge layoffs” Will this redound to the benefit of train travel?

    2. Amtrak will be cutting service to 3X.wj starting October 1. This is a cost-cutting measure but will probably cut revenues even more.

  5. OHIO: As of Sunday afternoon, there have been at least 144,390 confirmed or probable cases in the state, 4,615 deaths, and 14,773 hospitalizations, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

They always include numbers of people "presumed to have recovered", but I don't put that in because how would they ever know?
