OHIO; As of Thursday afternoon, there have been at least 61,331 confirmed or probable cases in the state, 3,006 deaths, and 8,570 hospitalizations, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
Breaking up monopolies was one of the cornerstones of The New Deal; it stimulated competition and decreased risk. One of the crimes (IMO) of the New Democrats was to say that monopolies are OK, in fact desirable, because they are more efficient.
I identify antitrust much more with TR than with FDR. I didn't get any sense of breaking up the big companies when I was growing up because for the most part it had already been done. But I agree that the New Democrats' friendly view toward the idea of oligopoly (not true monopoly) was a bad idea.
Back inside from spraying weeds; wanted to get that out of the way before things warmed up. We are a couple of days into an extended period of 100+ degree highs. Inside, cooled off, showered, about to have lunch and rustle up some links. Just glanced at the Supreme Court decisions re Trump Inc., and am not yet sure what the decision on the Congressional subpoenas means. The Grand Jury decision is pretty clear, though.
"Coronavirus in Illinois updates: More than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases reported for first time since early June as state sets single-day testing record and passes 150,000 total infections." Doesn't sound good.
We managed when the daily case load was approaching three times that high. The worry is not the number of cases but that, after falling, they now seems to be heading back up again. Maybe that's just a blip from people getting careless over the holiday weekend, hope-hope-hope.
Biden unveils $700bn 'buy American' proposal to revive US industry [Click] OH, GROAN. I remember decades ago when there was a big, politically popular, movement to buy American. It fell flat on its face because so few things were made in the USA. For instance, when governments requested bids on automobile fleets “made in USA” they received zero bids, because all automobiles contained foreign-made parts. And supply chains have become far more complicated since then. It occurs to me to wonder what kind of pen Biden uses—Trump uses a Chinese-made felt tip pen. Even if Biden went first cabin and used an Edison pen, the nib would be made in Germany.
So results from the NY-01 primary are in at last. Chemist Nancy Goroff won by just over 630 votes out of more than 46,000 cast.
One reason for the delay was that ballots didn't have to be mailed until Election Day, so they didn't start counting mail ballots until a week later. But then counting all the ballots in Suffolk County took seven days, not including the weekend. I'm not sure whether this was due to limited manpower or whether there were legal obstacles to having more people involved. But in thinking about the November election, we need to remember that things are done differently in every state.
That each state is different came up on Vermont Edition today on VPR. In Vermont, you can register to vote on election day, if needed, but all ballots must be received by 7:00pm on Election Day. That ensures people aren't waiting a week for results. Town Clerks are supposed to certify their count within 48 hours, too. We tend to have the ballots all counted, the space cleaned up, and all the ballots in the safe at the town clerk's office by 10:00pm.
Incase you missed it, I thought this was very well written. I posted it and my family saw it, and I thought they would be shocked, because I don't use that kind of language myself. But! Eldest responded: "Jaime Schulte A bit of strong language is not unwarranted." (So I felt accepted and relieved.)
Anyway, he's right, and check this out:
Stephen Wright wrote and posted this on Wednesday at 2:00pm...
"So if you didn’t catch this mornings shitshow, it went basically like this:
"The CDC put out its official recommendations and requirements states should meet before reopening schools.
"Trump went to twitter, shitted on the CDC recommendations, demanding that k-12 schools fully open up in the fall. He threatened to cut federal funding if they do not.
"Then the coronavirus task force held a press conference, minus Fauci, because he’s on the President’s shit list.
"Betsy Devos said she really really really wants kids back in school. She does not know how to do this, offered no suggestions. Just that they need to open, and leaves it up to local officials to figure it out.
"Vice President Pence said children are resilient. Basically made out of cartilage with healthy lungs. They probably won’t get sick, so we shouldn’t worry about them. There is also no disagreement between the CDC and Trump. Trump wants schools to open, and just doesn’t want the CDC’s guidelines to be the reason for schools not opening?
"Yes, he actually said he doesn’t want states to keep their schools closed just because their own CDC says it is not safe to open.
"So the VP says, don’t worry, let’s bring up the Director of the CDC to clarify. -And I could‘ve sworn I heard this guy gulp off camera.
"But the director of the CDC comes up and says he also wants schools to open safely. He said he likes his job and wants to keep it, therefore, he is also in full agreement with Trump, despite the guidelines they released hours before.
"So then Dr. Birx comes on and says half the country has seen a surge of new cases. The country is worse off than it was back at the start of all this. She said they should return to phase 1 and start all over.
"Now, an astute reader may wonder how do half the states return to phase 1, and still expect to open by fall? Good question. ..... And while you were thinking about it, Birx tries to leave the podium.
"But before she gets away, Pence stops her, suggests she ‘talk about that other thing about the children’. She hesitates, then agrees.
"She comes back up to the mic, says most children probably won’t die. Maybe 0.02%. And usually the ones who die were already sick, so you parents at home may want to keep an eye on them. Oh- and we have virtually no data on how transmissible the virus is in children because we’ve barely tested any of them, but let me get out of your hair.
"Pence comes back and says, see, we’re good here.
————————-
"So while all that is going Cuomo is holding his own press conference.
"He says I don’t even give a shit what Trump is saying. It’s not worth responding to the clown. States control school openings, and we will do it as safely as possible, end of discussion.
"Other states blew off our warnings, and now they are paying the price. You want to fix your states? Pull your heads out of your asses and follow our example.
—————————
"And Fauci has gone total rogue. He has been giving interviews across the media spectrum, politely telling anyone who will listen that following trump’s orders regarding the Coronavirus will lead to certain doom. Death and economic disaster on a scale never seen before. Please turn back while you still can.
I fell down on my linking today, but was tired and figured you all could find as much as you wanted... there's more than enough to go around. But I must say it does not look promising for Our Dear Leader. I hope Biden refuses to debate until Trump releases his tax returns.

The Central Park Five, the guys trump hounded for a crime they didn't commit, helped paint the mural in front of trump tower. Sweet.

Delete1272 cases (+16🙁)
ReplyDelete56deaths(0x22days)
Now 162 active cases
Recovered 1054
In Hospital = 3 ( +1)
Tests 72,749 (+1003)
4.4% of cases have resulted in death
2% of Vermonters have gotten the virus.
.0089% of Vermonters have died.
11 of the 16 new cases are in my county. 🙄😷
DeleteWhoa! Just noticed I missed a decimal!
Delete.2% of Vermonters have tested positive, not 2%!
OK, that's better...
