    1. Er, and how do they propose their city will function without a police department?

[That’s easy—police funding and operations are a city government matter.]

A majority of the Minneapolis City Council vowed on Sunday to disband the local police department and replace the office with what members have said will be a new model of public safety, the New York Times reports.

The First Step Is Figuring Out What Police Are For
For reform to succeed, American communities need to have a conversation about what the purpose of police is, and think hard about what jobs could be better handled by other institutions.

    Gotta run….

But people don't always distinguish the different levels of government. There was the time I was canvassing for a Congressional candidate and got a question about her stand on a school district issue. That's aside from the frustration people like me feel knowing we can't affect any of this.

    2. The concept of policing has to be totally revamped. The way police officers are selected and trained has to be totally revamped. These abstracts are givens. In practical application, though, what entity, what people are going to perform the functions of these dismantled police departments while the new and improved versions are aborning? Who will answer domestic violence calls? Who will direct traffic? Who will arrest murderers and rapists and child pornographers? Because, crimes and misdemeanors are not going to cease just because there are suddenly no cops anywhere to be seen. This is an even loonier idea than dismantling the immigration and border services. Such functions are of vital importance. They cannot just stop. Fundamental, systemic reform must be introduced, but you can't just shut them down!

  4. 9AM class rescheduled for 11AM tomorrow. Lazy fellow that I am, I will not go back and make up links for all those headlines. But I thought of another way to maintain lawn order: have your kids mow it.

How do you say “cut the grass” in French?

      “Mow de lawn.”

  5. In Vermont this weekend there were peaceful protests and no one was arrested. Last week at an event, a police officer caused a woman to fall on stairs. Over the weekend the two met and made amends, with a desire to move forward in race relations and equality.

    1. Vermont has ramped up testing. Anyone who wants a test can have it, even if asymptomatic. No doctor’s note needed.

But NOTE! Only 1 in 5 who recently tested positive had any symptoms.
