Interesting article in The Economist For some time now US military recruits have been predominantly middle class. [Click] In addition to possible changes in political inclinations, it means that the role the services used to play as a way into the middle class for disadvantaged recruits has become considerably diminished. [N.B.: The writer and editor make a rather glaring error for a magazine of such a name—they confuse family annual income with wealth.]
Profit over people, cost over care: America's broken healthcare exposed by virus [Click] Why, imagine that! Who ever heard the like? Well, signing off now. Time to get some work done on my beginning printing class projects (two) and then cut back a vine spilling over the fence from the neighbors' back yard.
I am making progress at redistributing the contributions I had been making to Bernie. The area food bank was an easy first choice. Next up the local junior college food pantry. I sent one small donation to AOC.
My white-line wood block print is coming along; the printing is slow going because it has to dry frequently. So I am getting a start on my intaglio printing, using acrylic instead of a copper plate, so it can be printed by hand. I figure to color the second print by hand, which I discover is a species of "aquatint," which makes it sound considerably fancier. Well, time for dinner and then some.
I have just signed up to continue my monthly contribution to Bernie. The campaign may be over but the movement continues. I won't be contributing to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. About a year and a half ago I intended to contribute $30 but accidentally hit the key twice and contributed $330. I tried to contact the Depository about the excess contribution, but got no answer. So I assume they already have my contribution for the next decade. I have contributed to Meals on Wheels, though. I usually contribute once a year.
It had been looking a bit like rain coming, so I checked the weather prediction [at weatherunderground.com] and discovered that something new had been added: a coronavirus report. It says now 295 cases (confirmed, I suppose) and 7 deaths.
