Gonna Pop Open Any Day...

  1. OHIO: COVID confirmed cases, 9,107 - deaths 418

Gov. DeWine is doing okay for a Republican, which - truthfully - surprises me. He has joined the Midwest States Pact to co-ordinate on re-opening strategies. The states are:

    Illinois
    Ohio
    Michigan
    Indiana
    Wisconsin
    Minnesota
    Kentucky

    1. Whatever he's drinking, can we get some for other Republicans?

    2. Vermont’s Republican Governor, Phil Scott, has been doing a fabulous job, and has been staying the sanity course, no matter what fool thing DT says. I think he will get re-elected. I really like the progressive Dem running against him, and even I am tempted.

  2. Wall Street Journal: “Mr. Biden’s team is ramping up its outreach to liberals, trying to ease tensions between the Democratic establishment and left-leaning activists and young people as he works to build a coalition to defeat Republican President Trump in November. Mr. Biden has earned endorsements from his top competitors for the 2020 presidential nomination, including Mr. Sanders and fellow liberal Sen. Elizabeth Warren, but hasn’t yet won over all of their former backers.”

Oh yeah, I’ve sure noticed a lot of that. But on the other hand, why would he approach me? I’m an old conservative [a New Deal] Democrat; that’s why I supported Bernie. The question in my mind is whether that line about how he “hasn’t yet won over all of their former backers” is purposeful propaganda or a symptom of psychosis.

    1. He's not *going* to win over Progressives with his stubborn views! Lowering the age for Medicare to 60? Yeah, that helps a lot of people. He is ignorant about marijuana and does not even support *medical* use. IF he wins, and it's a BIG IF, we're just going to get the same old same old. Prescriptions we can't afford, medical bills we can't pay. A paycheck that barely pays basic expense. But, yeah, he'll protect the rich. He's already told them not to worry because their lifestyles won't be affected. Oh goody! I'm so glad to hear that Jeff Bezos can continue to look forward to earning $8Million a day for the work *others* do. I'm voting AGAINST TRUMP because he is dangerous and bat shit crazy, but no way do I support grabby, sniffing mummy-looking Joe Biden! The Democratic Establishment has a REAL TALENT for pushing forth losing candidates! Al Gore, John Kerry, Hillary, yeah - a definite lack of judgment there!

    2. What’s up with the article saying Sen. Warren and Mr. Sanders?!! Humpf! Bernie is also a *Senator*!!! The author shouldn’t be so disrespectful!! 🤨

    3. And "Mr. Biden," too. I think I detect some sexism here.

    4. Thanks, Bill. I was skimming on my phone and missed the sentence about Biden.

    5. I hear you, Susan.

Al Gore would have won if BC hadn’t screwed around. I still haven’t really forgiven him.

    6. I remain of the opinion that Al Gore would probably have won if he hadn't conceded Florida before the votes were counted.

  3. Coming soon: Shakespeare and Trump [Click] Sounds pretty high concept! I’d be tempted to get a copy, but it is too expensive.

  4. Headline: "Trump appears to stoke protests against stay-at-home orders"
Breaking news: Sun seems likely to rise in east

And let us not forget that there are good people on both sides.

  5. Another headline:
NHS staff told 'wear aprons' as protective gowns run out

Exclusive: U-turn on original guidelines of full-length waterproof gear for high-risk procedures

They ought to dress themselves in plastic garbage bags.

    1. Polling suggests they are as concerned as other Americans about the Covid-19 threat and, if anything, less concerned than most about the economic situation. The point is ideological: They don't want the government to tell them what to do rather than requesting their voluntary cooperation. But Illinois' mandatory lockdown was triggered precisely by St. Patrick's Day crowds ignoring the governor's request to minimize bar and restaurant contact.

    2. So, they’re either headstrong to the point of folly, or ignorant of events. I think: both.

The difference between accepting quarantine and protesting quarantine is empathy for others or lack thereof.

Gallup: U.S. Economic Confidence Shows Record Drop [Click]
Hmmmmmm. . . ”Over the past month, all party groups have shown steep declines in economic confidence, but Republicans' drop has been the steepest. Since March, Republicans' index score has fallen 72 points, while the drop has been 50 points among independents and 37 points among Democrats.”

  8. Well, time to get moving. I will fasten a painting into a frame, then recommence my multicolor woodblock and begin my intaglio project.

    1. There is question about how representative a sample was obtained, and some have wondered how specific the test is for antibodies to the new coronavirus, compared to other more innocuous coronaviruses. I expect both of those will be hashed out in the press in days to come.

    2. The sensitivity is estimated at 80% (not bad considering mild and early infections) and the specificity 99.5% (quite satisfactory).

    3. That *is* good!

Y'know, I think I've been underestimating how quickly we really could learn a LOT about this virus. There are so many scientists around the world studying it (and experiencing it), and we have such quick and easy means of sharing the information. It's too bad the biological work takes its own sweet time. But that's (literally) life.
