  2. Oops--it seems that I failed to give warning of my absence for court in South Lake Tahoe; just got back home at 10:30 PM. Two days because of the travel time.--Alan

    2. It was not a stressful case; the defense won during jury selection and the prosecution caved. But the defense attorney was prepared to mount a vigorous attack on every part of the case; he is a graduate of Hastings School of Law (UC Berkeley's secondary law school, located in San Francisco). Every Hastings graduate but one whom I have ever encountered has been outstanding. I don't think I have ever encountered a Boalt Hall (UC Berkeley's principal law school) grad; they probably follow the same sort of career track as Yale and Harvard Law grads rather than workaday criminal and civil law.

    3. Rather, it wasn't a stressful case for me.

    4. I remember you mentioning the South Lake Tahoe trip. I believe in the context of it being a week later than you had thought.

  3. Excellent cartoon to start off today's thread.

  4. Column: Establishment Democrats face a dilemma: How to do in Bernie Sanders without alienating his young voters. Interesting because the columnist is an anti-Trump conservative. I disagree that Warren is Hilary 2.0, but the establishment may be half-way willing to accept her because she is a less forceful campaigner than Bernie.

  5. NYT: Super PAC Attacks Sanders in an Ad. Sanders Raises $1.3 Million in a Day. [Click] “As Bernie Sanders shows strength in the early-voting states, his opponents face a challenge: Attacking him can help fuel his campaign.”

“Andrew Yang said he won’t be surprised if his voters end up supporting Bernie Sanders in later rounds of the Iowa caucus voting — a development that could strengthen Sanders’s already-surging campaign in the state,” Bloomberg reports. [Click]

AND….. here’s a new Berkeley IGS Poll [the most reliable for California]:

Sanders 26%, Warren 20%, Biden 15%, Buttigieg 7%, others less. If Biden falls below 15% in the actual voting, he gets skunked.

    1. "If Biden falls below 15% in the actual voting, he gets skunked." That goes caucus site by caucus site. If he is above 15% at any given site (after caucusgoers favoring those with less support have redistributed their votes), he gets delegates to the state convention. I'm not entirely clear how state convention delegates translates into national delegates.

  6. 😃👍 My MINI is home!! 🚗
The mechanic told me that we were hit HARD by the Dodge Ram 2500 ~ so hard structurally that we should not have even been driving it...!! 😵 They had to replace everything behind the back seats. Wow! The Ram’s insurance company will be getting a big additional charge. I guess that explains why repairs took 13 business days instead of the estimated 9 days. It’s all the more amazing that we were not injured. A Mini Cooper (now built all by BMW) is extremely well built and does great in crash tests. I am so grateful. It’s been 46 days since the accident. So grateful to have my wheels home!

    1. I remember when the Toyota Camry I was driving got caught in a double-ender, seemingly minor. The more the body shop disassembled it, the more they found that had to be fixed. They had to update the estimate with the insurance company several times.

BTW, I was once moved to investigate the curb weights of the British Mini and the BMW Mini--the latter weighs about twice as much as the former.

  7. I arrived home just as the Trial proceedings were getting under weigh (spelling carefully chosen). The House Managers are doing a fine job today, and it remains to be seen how honest and free the Senators are. This is definitely the most interesting day so far.

The DNC Approved And Kept Private A Generous Exit Package For Tom Perez And Two Top Deputies [Click] “Within just days of the Iowa caucus, the DNC’s own leadership has been furiously trying to figure out the details of an ‘extra compensation’ plan for Tom Perez and two top deputies, who now say they won’t accept the money.” Clueless…

Bloomberg Hammers Trump on Health Care [Click] Well, I do appreciate Mr. Bloomberg thrashing Trump; but I won’t be voting for him.

  13. Confession: When Alan Dershowitz was doing his Wormtongue thing, I went over to my TV screen and slapped his face a few times. And I dare say it felt good.

    Sigh.

  14. BTW, the primary voting in California (but only at the county clerks' offices) starts on Feb. 3rd, a few hours before the Iowa caucuses convene. As memory serves me, we typically get our voters' pamphlets and sample ballots that week, and our regular (mail-in) ballots the following week. So far only one piece of campaign literature--for Devin Nunes' opponent.

    1. It should be a simple ballot this year; I think there is only one proposition on offer. Hmmmm....maybe I can get copies of the voters' pamphlet and ballot online.

    2. I was mistaken, evidently:

      Dates to Remember

      February 3, 2020
      First day to vote-by-mail
      February 18, 2020
Last day to register to vote
      February 25, 2020
Last day to apply for a
      vote-by-mail ballot by mail
      March 3, 2020
      Election Day
      Polls are open 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

And It seems the voters' pamphlet just included the one proposition, so we have it already. So the actual ballots should arrive next week.

Cat--I see that Howie Hawkins is running for both the Green and the Peace & Freedom nominations in California. I will read his statement shortly.
