  2. Regarding what states can do...I received this email last evening from one of my State Senators:

    Dear Friend:

It shouldn't take a tragedy for elected officials to pass gun safety legislation. Whether it's Congress or a state legislature, we should be in the prevention business.

In recent days many of you have asked me for an update on where gun safety legislation stands in Vermont. Here are five key points:

    1. In 2018 we enacted the first significant gun safety legislation in Vermont's history. When Governor Scott announced he was reversing his longtime opposition to gun legislation, those of us who have long supported such measures finally found a potential path to passage. Speaker Johnson and I led our respective chambers through some tense debates, and ultimately delivered meaningful legislation to the Governor's desk, where it was signed into law. The legislation included four key provisions:

Requires background checks for all gun sales in Vermont. Prior to this legislation, a background check would be required to purchase a hunting rifle at Walmart, but not to buy an AR-15 on the internet. The provision also eliminated what's been referred to as the "gun show loophole." That means that every gun sold at a show, even from one private individual to another private individual, must go through the background check system. Only licensed firearm dealers were previously required to run a check.
Raises the purchase age for all firearms to 21 unless the individual has gone through an approved safety course.
Bans the sale or possession of bump stocks like the one used in the Las Vegas concert shooting massacre.
Banned the sale of large capacity magazines for all gun types.

    2. In 2018 we passed legislation creating Extreme Risk Protection Orders, also referred to as the red flag law. ERPOs create a process to remove firearms from individuals who pose a risk of harm to themselves, their family members, or the public. The law was first used to remove firearms from the young man who was accused of planning to attack individuals at Fair Haven Union High School. In the year and a half it's been on the books, the law's been used in 10 of Vermont's 14 counties in cases of risk of harm to self, to spouse or other family member, and to the general public, including a school in Middlebury.

    3. This year the Legislature passed a waiting period for all gun purchases, but Governor Scott vetoed the bill. In a state with a serious suicide by firearm problem, this modest measure would give individuals going through a very hard time a day to get through whatever it is they're facing - a 24 hour chance to get to the other side of a dark time. The law would also help prevent some instances of impulsive gun violence intended to be inflicted upon others. Governor Scott's veto was massively disappointing.

    4. The bill the Governor vetoed also would have closed the Charleston loophole. Currently, when a background check is run, if the results do not come back within three days for whatever reason the individual is allowed to purchase the firearm or firearms. This was how, in 2015, a white supremacist procured the guns he used to shoot and kill nine African American worshipers at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Nearly all background checks are conducted instantaneously. We should not ignore the public safety benefits of completed checks due to the minor inconvenience experienced by an extremely tiny number of gun purchasers.

    5. Congress won't act, so we must. There is no reason to expect that President Trump or Mitch McConnell will advance any meaningful gun safety legislation, ever. While we wait for a federal government to emerge that will take action, we must move forward at the state level. At minimum I will be working with the Speaker to find a way past the Governor's veto

    Sincerely,

    Tim Ashe
    State Senator

  3. Trump’s Favorite Poll Falls in Line
August 20, 2019 By Taegan Goddard

The latest Rasmussen Reports poll — President Trump’s favorite, oft-cited poll — shows that just 44% of likely voters approve of his job performance, while 54% disapprove.
For comparison, the FiveThirtyEight polling average has Trump’s approval at 41.9% to 53.9%.

Trump Claims His Internal Polling Is Strong

President Trump tweeted about what he said were his “strongest” internal poll numbers, despite several public polls showing his disapproval ratings are climbing. He did not cite any numbers.

Let’s think this out. Say I am Trump’s pollster. I get a nice paycheck. I like that. I have read How to Lie With Statistics. [Click] Certainly I can give the customer what he wants; will I? “Rule No. 1: The customer is always right. Rule No. 2: When the customer is wrong, refer to Rule No. 1.”
