On Sunday, we drove up to Canada to visit our friend, Rod. First we attended the Pentecost service at his church, then took him out for brunch. His priest joined us at the restaurant, along with the priest’s brother and family, visiting from Singapore. What followed was a lively discussion with the priest’s brother all about American politics. We were all quite in agreement. Yet we somehow came away feeling like the embarrassed Americans who’d left the country for a day, but it followed us. Sigh.
The article makes the important point that the Southern Baptist Convention invented in 1979 was a totally new thing. The one I knew growing up was ultra-congregationalist and fiercely devoted to separation of church and state. But the article implicitly assumes that neither of those positions have any relevance for the current denomination. As, indeed, they haven't for the past 40 years.
For the China article, it's the second alternative that resonates with me. I'll note for the record that this is what Howard Dean supported. And the article implicitly notes that the so-called third alternative isn't really an alternative but a complementary approach.
Wow--now (6:45 PM) the temperature is 99F; it must have been a little over a hundred in the afternoon. They are predicting either 104F or 106F (take your choice) tomorrow. We have been asked to economize on electricity use tomorrow from 2PM to 7PM.
