Roses by the Quilt Shop

  1. Ohhh myyy! I have been doing a lot of deep cleaning here at home. I have unearthed Winter's clothing and set up for hot weather. I have sorted the top half of a "baker's rack" of papers. Then, today I took everything out of the Art Closet and completely reorganised it. I have thrown out bags of trash and boxes of recycling. I also managed to weed gardens and plant some new flowers. And I'm exhausted! In the midst of it all I got a strange irritated throat. It's not sore, but there is some irritation around my vocal cords and I'm a little hoarse. I've never had this before. Weird.

So I'm off to hit the hay. Tomorrow I drive a friend to the airport, then have two spiritual guidance meetings. Tuesday is low key and on Wednesday the Maine granddaughters come for the rest of the week! Hurrah! Can't wait!!

  2. Good going, listener--enjoy! I am preparing for my colonoscopy tomorrow; got some fancy ginger ale (hey, it's cheap for medicine!) to meet the "clear liquids" requirement. I am idling today, so have more than usual to inflict on the blog; will divide it into several parts.

Upset about the plastic crisis? Stop trying so hard [Click] Interesting psychological point: action bias.

The 2020 Democrats Are Running on an Outmoded Obama Climate Policy [Click] Economic factors have proven more powerful, anyway. And I observe that the Sierra Club’s “Beyond Coal” program continues to fly under the radar of the popular press.

  3. Presidential debates seldom move opinion polls; primary debates are a different matter [Click]

How 2020 Democrats Are Preparing for the Debates [Click] “…for some [the debates] could end up serving less as a moment of introduction than as a farewell…”

Hmmmmm…..Might I watch the debates this time? It would be a first for me. Not being accustomed to TV interviews I might find it difficult to endure, but as a demonstration of public speaking ability it could be interesting, if rather over the top.

California governor: "Xenophobic" GOP will be 3rd party in 10-15 years [Click] He doesn’t seem to address the question of which will be the second party.

  4. Biden’s Media Strategy: Duck The Press Unless You’re Under Duress [Click] ‘It’s not a tenable strategy,’ David Axelrod laments.

The Ivory Tower team of wonks behind Warren’s policy agenda [Click] “The 2020 hopeful has tapped deep into her former world of academia, going well beyond Beltway think tanks.” Works for me! This is IMO several cuts above the typical politico.com article; very well worth reading, probably the best item I have posted today.

Analysis of Why Iran Has Been Provoking Trump [Click] Sounds very reasonable, and also sounds considerably more astute than Trump and his gang of amateurs.
Trump Imposes Sanctions on Iran’s Supreme Leader [Click] Absolutely asinine, but not the least atypical for DT.

  5. Mars rover's large methane discovery excites scientists [Click] “Curiosity’s record-breaking measurement fuels speculation it is from microbial Martians” but it might not be. If they ever manage to find life on Mars, genetic analysis is going to be absolutely fascinating; will it show independent origins on the two planets, or a common origin? If the latter, might there be any indication of whether Mars seeded life on Earth or vice versa?

‘I’ll be flying 'til I die!’ Why Wally Funk won’t give up her lifelong space mission [Click] Wow! This woman’s biography (about to go on sale) belongs in every public and school library!

Oh, horrors! Bibuolus Britons won’t be able to booze as much on Eurostar! Surely this will increase support for Brexit! [Click]

  6. Two product reviews:

Reed's Original Ginger Brew All Natural Jamaican Style Ginger Ale:
    Very good! A real treat.

Reed's Extra Ginger Brew All Natural Jamaican Style Ginger Beer:
VERY EXTRA GINGER! Pretty powerful stuff--I bet it would go great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

  8. Washington Post theater critic evaluates Kamala Harris’ performances in South Carolina—and plans to evaluate other Democratic candidates as well. [Click] Herewith bits and pieces of the columnist’s observations, as well as mine.
    She keeps audiences waiting.
I notice she is wearing more colorful clothing now.
“…seeking to project warmth, strength and a common touch.”
“The president gets under Harris’s skin so thoroughly…”
“…the candidate lapses into long-winded replies to questioners, too frequently couched in Washington buzzwords.”
    Loses the audience at times.
“… navigating personality politics is not Harris’s forte…” By her own admission she is not a natural on the stump.
“Her overuse of hand gestures, to embroider her responses, felt unnatural.”
She gives non-responsive answers to questions; in an attorney, that can’t be a mistake.

    1. I watched the video. She can't tell a joke effectively. She is hyperactive, dancing around. AND SHE IS FAKING A SOUTHERN ACCENT AT TIMES!

All in all, I think that isn't going to play. And I didn't notice any indication that people asked her about some of her notorious behavior in California, such as laughing about intimidating poor parents by threatening to imprison them for not making sure their kids attended school regularly.

    2. From her past actions I actually think she's a pretty horrible person. Ambitious, yes, but for her own goals, not to help others. And Cory Booker and his girlfriend? That totally looks like an "I'm really not gay" move to me. Plus I've never forgiven him for voting "No" on Bernie's bill to allow Medicare to shop drug prices. I'm all in on Bernie, despise Joe Biden, and Elizabeth Warren is looking good. The rest of them are pretty much zeroes at this point and Mayor Pete is in a whole lot of trouble with Black People.

  9. Like listener I've been doing a lot of cleaning at home and I had a terrible realization. Not only do I have too much stuff I just keep shuffling it around, storing it in new ways and piling things higher. It's not that I never give anything away, because I do. I have a "Give Away" hamper by the front door and I make trips to the thrift shop about every other week. I also take the items I've finished to the Pantry for donation. But still, I must have the world's largest collection of fabric not belonging to a store. I just got a new serger and it took me three days to get the space for it cleared out because it was under a mountain of felt which I use a lot in toys. Ugh. And I *still* don't want to get rid of any of it. I purchased most of it - 95% at least - from thrift stores, so $1 a yard rather than $11 or more. I'm just finding it very hard to free up time to sew these days. I have 71+ storage boxes full of fabric, and that's not counting the closet in my sewing room - which is a double, or the piles of folded fabric all around the room. Trying very hard to stay the heck out of thrift stores and STOP BUYING FABRIC for a good while.

    1. Reminds me of me and my books. Except these days I only bury e-books, so storage is not a problem. Lucky things hard disks hold so much.

    2. I have an extensive library too--as well as my college notebooks.
