(They're similar at each site, so I recommend the Burlington set. They used the time well.)
Things seem to have come rather a long way from the days of Henry VIII!
ReplyDeleteHa! First I heartily laughed. Then I groaned.
DeleteThe truth is that Anglicans, and by extension Episcopalians, enjoy apostolic succession. This branch of the church wasn't started by Henry VIII. He just capitalised on what was already going on.
Alan Simpson and Norm Mineta interview [Click] An excerpt—something that particularly sticks in my mind:
ReplyDeleteMineta: I remember May of 1995. Alan and Ann [Alan’s wife] went back to Cody and announced that Alan was not going to seek reelection in 1996. Before they went out, we talked about it. I said, “Why are you going to not run in ’96? You’re in the majority and you ought to stick around.” He says, “No. The stability of this place is starting to go. I want to get out of here before it’s totally gone.” That was during Bill Clinton’s first term.
So where did Alan go? I might need to go there too.
DeleteI believe that was about the time Republicans came up with their "Contract for America" that made everything a partisan issue rather than a matter for the individual representative's judgement. I view that as the biggest single factor in our current mess.
DeleteAlan Simpson went home. This Alan got back home from San Jose a little before 5:30; rain all the way home, although mostly light--another winter-type storm IN MAY!
DeleteAnd you are right about the Contract on America, Bill; they rolled it out in 1994 according to Wikipedia.
Yes, I remember. Though it seemed terrible at the time, no one could have guessed how terrible it actually was. Bill is right on this one IMO.

ReplyDeleteAnd I must get moving; we are off to San Jose in about an hour.
ELECTED ON THE FIRST BALLOT!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Rev. Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown!
And there was great rejoicing!!!
She was my favourite! Such a warm person with a voice that's easy to listen to. I am excited that others thought her the one as well...!! Hurrah! I'd say she is the one of the three that I could most easily imagine having a heart to heart conversation with. Humble, intelligent, open, and an excellent listener.
DeleteGlad you got your first choice, listener.
DeleteKid's here, werking his butt off as per usual.
ReplyDeleteHi Puddle.
DeleteGood Kid!! ♥
DeleteYou know how you know a fertilized egg is not human? Because if you freeze a human, s/he dies.
ReplyDeleteOh? [Click] He ducks…
DeleteWell, that wasn't what I expected. Enjoyable, especially since now I don't have to see the movie.
DeleteFrom IMDB.com:
Delete"Miles, a nebbishy clarinet player who also runs a health food store in NYC's Greenwich Village, is cryogenically frozen, and brought back - 200 years in the future, by anti-government radicals in order to assist them in their attempt to overthrow the oppressive government. When he goes off on his own, he begins to explore this brave new world..."
There are a LOT of really good (but dated) jokes in the movie.

ReplyDeleteI finished The Rainbow Trail and have returned to The Star Thrower. Having lost my place, I've reread several essays, which is a sheer delight. Eiseley is a sensitive, evocative, thought provoking writer. What a magnificent human being he must have been! No doubt I'll return to this book many times.

Maybe you'd best not read this one, Susan. It could put you over the edge.
