It's never too early...

2019 Mississippi River Flood the Longest-Lasting Since the Great Flood of 1927 [Click] Among other things, the inadequate federal response to the flooding of 1927 spurred the exodus of Black people from the South to the cities of the North, and ended Black support for the Republican Party.

Wow—bad flooding in Vermont too, in 1927. [Click]

    1. That report from The Weather Channel is sobering. Still, I can't help wondering, what with Trump's trade war hurting largely his constituency and these floods hurting, one presumes, largely his constituency, if the two things might combine to, erm, weaken his base. And, if so, seems to me Bernie would benefit most. After all, as the media never tires of pointing out, there are significant similarities between him and Trump. As I've always said (for whatever my ideas may or may not be worth), much of Trump's constituency would seem to be Bernie's natural constituency. If the similarities draw them to take a look for long enough to see that the key differences are to their advantage... Oh, well. A girl can dream.

    2. Dream on, Cat. Tonight in the town in which Bernie was mayor, I stopped at a Cumberland Farms convenience store because most everything else was closed and I really needed a pit stop. As I walked through I heard the proprietor joking to the deli person: "you can't say anything anymore if your a white male or you're a Christian or you like Trump." I almost just turned and walked out. But I really needed that pit stop.

    3. Well, now you know to plan your trips to Burlington so as to avoid pit stops at that particular store.

  2. We had a significant amount of rain last night; unusual for this late in the year. The storm came from the north--it went through the San Francisco area one or two days before. And over the past several evenings we have seen one or two (at a time) little (bodies maybe six or eight inches long) possums eating the food we put out for them.

    2. I knew that they ate insects, but didn't think of ticks. We have few ticks down here on the valley floor, but they are a definite problems in the foothills.

  3. Having slept less than well last night, I took a nap about 3PM; waking, I bethought me to take my evening walk early--but then noticed a sound like wind or rain. It proved to be wind AND rain! The weatherperson evidently changed his/her mind! I can probably find something else to do.

Yesterday was the last working day of my introductory drawing class; final critique will be Monday. I realized I was feeling a bit down about the end of class--both the education and the company. There were some subjects we didn't get as heavily into as I had hoped, but one must learn to toddle before walking, I suppose. We were just getting into figure drawing from models (no nudes) and gesture drawing (think 30 seconds or less per drawing), and I expect I can now get past the one thing that I was really scared of with respect to my ink and watercolor sketching plans--humans. I don't want every drawing to look like the day after the neutron bomb. So with what I learned and online help, I will study independently over the summer. My tentative plan is two half-hour penmanship sessions per day (which should get me through the course I purchased in about three months) and ten simple figure sketches per day, which adds up to nearly a thousand during the summer--which ought to be enough for me to get the hang of it. Still wintry looking outside. Hmmm.... maybe I will transfer a couple of short figure drawing YouTube lessons to a DVD disk for ready access.

P.S.: Also daily: about 20 minutes' stretching exercises and 4 km (2.5 miles) walking. Not to mention other stuff such as gardening and garage cleaning. If I pull all that off I am going to feel so virtuous I'll hardly be able to stand myself.

    2. Congratulations, Alan! You have worked hard for this course and have reason to feel good about the accomplishment. Good for you having a regular practice through the Summer. Thoughts on another class come the Autumn?

    2. I'm not sure I understand why impeachment proceedings would be necessary to enforce the subpoenas. But if that's the way the Constitution works ---

    3. The administration is claiming that they need only comply with the subpoenas if there is a legislative proceeding included.

    2. That's a humdinger of an article. Those goddamned New Democrats! Not Democrats at all. This gives me more reason than ever to hope Warren gains traction. Her idear here is spot on, and needs to be placed smack dab in the center of the party platform.

I remember the controversy over airline deregulation. Even as a very young person (barely into my teens if memory serves), deregulation struck me as a terrible idea. On the other hand, while Washington was busy deregulating everything in sight from then onward, they unaccountably broke up the only monopoly that actually made sense, to whit Ma Bell.

    3. Glad you liked it, Cat. I sure did. I adjusted my contributions in Warren's favor after reading it. In re the New Democrats, why vote for someone who is partly Republican when the real article is on offer?
