Summer Plumage

  1. The Kennebunk Inn ghosts seem benign; Japanese legend reports some murderous ghosts. In my wife's home village (now a town of several thousand) at one time there was a series of unexpected deaths and people began to suspect a vindictive ghost. A group of villagers visited Miyoko's grandfather, who was highly respected, and asked him to do something. He researched deaths in the village, looking for someone deceased who might have borne a grudge to the grave; he discovered that a priest had died and not been given a funeral. Consequently he arranged a funeral and the customary subsequent memorial services, and the unexpected deaths stopped.

As I was writing this, I recalled something Confucius said about public ceremonies, such as prayers for rain (which would be performed by the ruler). He opined that they probably didn't have any effect on (e.g.) the rain, but they should be performed because the people expected them.

  2. Trump Asserts Executive Privilege Over Mueller Report [Click] WTF?!

Buttigieg launching a series of big-dollar fundraisers in California today. [Click] It seems he isn’t allergic to bundlers and such. Typically, he is not visiting the Central Valley; we’re just flyover territory. Although we have a number of cities larger than South Bend.

  3. Wow! Cause of Alzheimer’s diseases seems to have been discovered! [Click] Compelling evidence that it is a double prion disease. Points the way to new therapies, possibly also a blood test.

    1. Reflecting on this a bit more, it occurs to me that if the folks at UCSF have (as it appears) created antibodies to the offending amyloids, then PET scans should be relatively easy to develop, and probably will be developed, as part of research into new treatment protocols.
